Favoriting Mid-Valley Mutations with Austin Rich: Playlist from April 16, 2024 Favoriting

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

It's a lot like the 30's comic strip that is also great. It is not very much like the cartoons that everyone is much more familiar with. And it's a musical... so... yeah... it's a hard sell.

I'm reasonably acquainted with old school reggae, but not so much anything from 2018. Most of my musical choices were done out of complete ignorance, just looking for the food names, and then narrowing it down by whatever sounded good to me.

Austin Rich:

When I was DJing in PDX, we had a long-running Sunday line-up, of a Reggae show that had been on since the station had gone on the air, and a ska show that had been on that long, too. I think there was an experimental show, and a rotating slot that had other reggae shows occasionally, and those two long-running shows. (Which were two-hours each.) I always think of that as a typical "sunday" line-up.

Not long ago das from Big City Orchestra gifted me a Strawberry Switchblade DVD that I haven't yet watched. Been meaning to.

Years ago I read this great essay on Strawberry Switchblade - just found it: www.tangents.co.uk...

They're like Siouxsie twins, but a bit more cutesy.

And "Cutesy Siouxsie" did not test well with the kids.

Never heard the term “New Pop.” Thought it was just New Wave?

I do like the audacity of someone naming their record label, "Total Punk Records."

I know I didn't provide you with label info, so good job looking all that up. I am struck by the obscurity of the labels for most of these acts.

We get to know bands outside the context of their label when we find everything online.
