been listening to a lot of malian music (and guinean music) lately. including those 2 women you just played.
i have 10 african playlists, with every country represented, in order of a tour beginning with eritrea, going around the continent and ending in sudan.

This brings up a music archiving question open to all. I only have streaming service. And it's getting very unwieldy trying to find music with like 6 or 7 playlists that are started out as reporitories for "found" music and grew. Is there a service that offers searchable personal archives so I can search in a database-like fashion, like for specific genres or countries of origin?

i've never used napster; and as far as moving your music over neveract clearly knows a lot more about this than i do.
i do use spotify. i never use their algorithims or playlists; i just to listen to albums i don't have and to create my own playlists. (and you can turn off most of the stupid crap, like their feeble shot at social media!)
as far as i know, it has no provision for categorizing; but you can create playlists and name them as you wish (ie "african trip 1","african trip 2", etc)
- so you can *sort of* categorize them.

to the general "music saving" convo going on....how much time is put into the collecting of the music to the actual listening of it.? is most of the pleasure derived from the collecting or the listening to the music...?
Avatar 🍹 Swag For Life Member 8:24pm
Alex from Media:

↳ coelacanth∅ @8:20
Basically what I do now. Problem is that if I'm looking for a specific song and cant remember where I put it or the exact title I cant search my lists. It becomes frustrating to find it again de novo. Also limiting is that licenses come and go and songs formerly in playlists disppear without warning or book mark.
Avatar 🍹 Swag For Life Member 8:27pm
Alex from Media:

↳ tom tom the pipers son @8:24
Definitely listen is the main objective and source of pleasure. But all of the time you see me on any stream I'm on "collection alert" and will divert to pop into my lists at will. Onbly what I like and want to hear again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm

i enjoy collecting and organising, but i do listen to every playlist i've created (~120 of them)

Avatar 8:28pm

↳ Alex from Media @8:22
Just have your preferred streaming service open while listening.. cmd+c the artist/track.. cmd+v into search bar on the streaming service and then add it to the playlist of your choosing.. not automated, but very fast once you've done it a few times.

At this stage I'm the consumer and therefore my listening is for purely hedonistic purposes. My decision matrix is like/neutral/dislike. At work or driving I revert to the playlists. At night you can find me mainly listening to external sources for pleasure. Music that leaps out gets in a playlist.

Oh yes. Just not within my lists. It used to do that on the desktop version and it was very handy. But they phased that out for an app that doesn't do it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm
coelacanth∅:

↳ Alex from Media @8:24
that can be frustrating.
one thing i did was create playlists that aren't full-on freeform; they're stylistically grouped. so i might have a garage-psych playlist; a druggy pop-psych one; a long psych jam one; etc (entitled according to make and model of vintage automobile, of course!)
...or simply something like "Hank", or "Leonard Cohen"...

Apple Music has a very good search.. for any track.. you can ask it what playlist it's in..

i guess i think in terms of a music diet which enables me to make the space to target and appreciate things that i can single out fromthe massive amount of music that'a out there

My downfall is the collection bins- "Interesting" or "college radio nabs" playlists as sort of staging areas for not immediately categorizable music that never get cleaned up. All great stuff, but what is it? What sits next to what? Like planning a frigging wedding. 'Scuse me while I put the headphones back on.
