As for the Coens, I've liked a few (Lebowski, some early ones) but their gleeful nihilism gets old (esp. when they killed off the most likable character in "Burn..."). Their atttitude seems to be: everything sucks, people are awful, isn't this funny? L. Davis especially---they took a great idea for a film---upcoming folk singer tries to make it in the early '60s---and turned it into another story of an asshole character & all the other greedy, opportunistic people he runs into. And finally saw "Hudsucker" recently & thought it was amazing how they made a screwball comedy with all the required ingredients---except laughs.

As for the Coens, I've liked a few (Lebowski, some early ones) but their gleeful nihilism gets old (esp. when they killed off the most likable character in "Burn..."). Their atttitude seems to be: everything sucks, people are awful, isn't this funny? L. Davis especially---they took a great idea for a film---upcoming folk singer tries to make it in the early '60s---and turned it into another story of an asshole character & all the other greedy, opportunistic people he runs into. And finally saw "Hudsucker" recently & thought it was amazing how they made a screwball comedy with all the required ingredients---except laughs.

I saw Big Lebowski on opening night (also slightly high on that pot, which is v. unusual), before there was any "lore" about it, and it was like we went to a movie that hadn't been edited yet. None of it made any sense.
