One of these days I'll get a NAS unit, rip all my CDs. In the meantime i still play those shiny silver discs (and the big black ones). (I do have some external hard drives connected to my computer with hi-resolution files, which I have to listen to out of a set up from the computer).

Stork, I have my entire digital library backed up with a service "in the cloud." (Jeff G blessedly hipped me to them.) When my drive crashed a number of years ago, they immediately sent me a new drive with my full library on it. I had the option of just buying the drive from them or copying it over and returning the hardware. It was almost ridiculously efficient.

I hear Backblaze is a good backup service (I believe I heard it from Doug and Jeff G).
A friend moved from a house to an apartment in NYC, had some 10,000 CDs he ripped to a NAS, supposedly redundant, safe, had a malfunction and lost much of it (I had a bunch, helped him relpace it).

I hadn't heard of Traktor, but it's awesome that the world's greatest listing of farm tractors and parts handles music libraries, too! Do you have a backup of its database?

Backblaze is great -- use it for my laptop -- but their personal product doesn't support direct backup of a NAS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am
doctorjazz:

My backup of my music on external drives is pretty much non-existent (I obsess over NAS, cloud storage, read about it, ask about it, get overwhelmed, shelve it and don't do anything once again). While I wouldn't want to lose the digital only files I have, I'd probably be OK with the LPs and CDs (and replacing those from friends).

Yeah, the precious music is backed up solid - it lives in two places, on separate drives - but Traktor is a finicky fuck. i did something today that corrupted it, while in a panic over mysteriously, rapidly disappearing space on my mac internal hard drive - a situation that continues. and could cause a fatal crash. it's reading under 100 MB !! and i have no idea what's going on - should be at least 10 gigs free

funny story....

"Brian made me angry on that session as he kept us playing extra long while he held the phone up to his speakers--we were all blowing our chops, the take must have been ten minutes long and my fingers started to bleed from the grinding hard part. I kept my Fender Bass strings extra high for a big, punchy bottomy sound, always playing with a hard pick.) We knew it was a hit, but Brian loved what we were playing--probably talking to the rest of the gang or something. I gave him the finger on the way out, guess he was shocked, but he was careful after that not to work us to death. We became even closer then, and Brian and Marilyn sometimes came to my house for visits. He loved my Niagara roller chair.
