I'm not sure The Beatles, in their early live performances, were a model of being in tune all the time (aside from the loud band sound, there was the screaming to sing over. And mostly nobody cared what they sounded like anyway...)

This was part of the reason that Donna Jean got a bad rap with the Grateful Dead, she couldn't hear herself so her vocals didn't always synch-up with the music which was a shame because she's literally the only trained singer the Dead ever had.

That's really interesting-I always wondered about Donna Jean, stoned as the Dead were, you'd think they know how to audition a singer.
The Dead did have an amazing wall of amplification, but maybe they didn't do the monitor thing well (it projected out...).
These days, I see musicians (and TV personalities) use in-ear monitors.

Some write off Floyd after Syd as a Syd Barrett CoverBand. Or something. Also - they're a huge & Classick band & some dismiss that stuff. But they were just So Good. & one is pointedly reminded of that now & then. My two cents anyroad. I like to quote Blixa Bargeld crediting Floyd with bringing the Avant to the (commercial) Masses very effectively. Which is to say - they matter.

Everyone makes fun of the studio disc of "Ummagumma" but that was my first introduction to avant-garde composition. It was a short leap from there to Frank Zappa, Negativland, Captain Beefheart, free jazz, minimalism, Yoko Ono, noise rock, etc.

Hi Alex from Media! I’m not quite home yet. Still on the train.
Hard pan is when you hear totally different parts of a song in each speaker / headphone. Maybe vocals in the left and guitar in the right, for example. It’s a mixing technique in recorded music. Another great example is The Velvet Underground’s “The Gift.” If you shut off (I think!) the left channel (side), you’ll completely miss John Cale’s voice, and thus, the lyrics of the song.

I'm thinkin' 'Ummagumma' one of those Albums like Satanic Majesties that we're not supposed to like ...but everybody as individuals actually always has. & yeah - the individual member Studio Trax were sure as hell bringing the Avant to us. I literally put myself into altered states as a young kid with 'Ummagumma'.

Hard Panning from L-R / lots of Stereo Separation in a Mix were more common in the 1960s when Stereo was still new for most. People tend to Mix more 'naturally' now with more stuff towards the Middle of the 'stereo image'. Some say it was primitive. Maybe. I wonder if it wasn't just more adventurous ...it never bothered me much. & hearing Hendrix bounce around in 3D seems kewl. I suppose now with 5.1 & Atmos maybe it's back in a sense - with stuff moving around &/or having distinct positions in space again !...

Equinox = 'Equal Night'.
One of two moments a year that Day & Night are equal length - & everywhere on Earth. Although in the Southern Hemisphere now it means Autumn begins with Night growing longer than Day for half the year.
With yer Solstices (lit. 'Sun Stands Still') - which are the longest & shortest daylight - you got the four seasons & the four corners of the the wheel of the year. Inbetween those four are your CrossQuarter Sabbats (Groundhogs, MayDay, Lamas, Halloween...)

I have Reverse SAD. So I get happy when there's less sunlight so the arrival of spring always kind of bums me out. Summer is when it really gets bad though. Autumn usually brings me joy.

I remember this duo: produced by Jules Shear, I think? I really liked this when it was first released, and it still sounds great.
