I really regret not pursuing french more. I studied in High School and College, but it just didn't stick. I sort of recognize things... but I have to do some homework to really understand.

I studied French from 7th grade onward and even two years of college. The best lessons I had was when I was in Paris for six weeks after high school graduation. Immersion is the best way to learn.

That's very cool! It got a few scholarships in college, but not many, and nothing like that! I got one to fly to FSU (in Florida) to present a paper at a conference. It was almost more work than a vacation.

I wanted to take French in high school because my best friend did. but my mother forced me to take Spanish, and then Latin when we moved to a place where the school offered it. Both were taught by incompetent instructors and I learned little Spanish and less Latin.

My high school French teacher was Persian. She was studying Mandarin in her 60s. She was such a dear. In junior high I had two French teachers. I learned a lot about grammar from them.

The little bit that I learned did help during my time in Chicago. One of the few things I'm missing since I moved is the excellent, cheap corn tortillas available in markets big and small. There must be somewhere to buy decent tortillas in Philly, but I haven't found it yet.
