Obscure musical gems, avant experimentation, and classics worth rehearing. A conurbation of Leslie speakers, timbales, plungers, arch-tops, tablas, and squeaky reeds. Black ties, pork pies, Cuban boots, Nudie suits, bobbysocks, turtlenecks, and high-heeled sneakers. Jazz is the north star but it’s a wide universe, so says The Laughing Clock.

Hey Happy Timekeper!

Perhaps the laughter is hollow, a sad attempt to keep up one’s spirits in the face of the reality.
E.g., Jimmy Harrison’s early death!

Live Coltrane recordings (released posthumously) often contain a bass solo. But studio recordings during Coltrane‘s lifetime almost never do. Why?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm
DJ Peter:

↳ Listener Gregory @7:06
Oh, interesting!
I'm sure P.C. took an arco solo here and there on Prestige. And there's of course brief Garrison cadenzas on LOVE SUPREME... but the contrast between live and studio is intriguing...

I think the recent discovery of a live performance of A Love Supreme has a long bass solo not found on the original studio recording.

I have the Mosaic Elvin Jones Blue Note box, have to pull it out and listen to it a bit more...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm
DJ Peter:

That's a box that I think you need to listen to a session, put it aside, come back to it. There's a lot going on but... not that there's a sameness but if you don't pay attention somehow the highlights don't stand out
  7:22pm
Listener Gregory:

@doctorj, I just came across the same Mosaic collection when I re-filed some records. My memory is that it’s quite good. Joe Farrell is not sufficiently appreciated, IMHO.

I haven't heard Robert Dick on FMU. His extended flute technique and inventions, like the slide flute, are pretty impressive.

Yves-Artaud is doing a pretty bang-up job on this composition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm

As a former flute player who could not get a good sound out of the piccolo, i'm in awe of anyone who can play all the flutes in succession. (I wonder how much time he took between the different etudes in the studio)
