Favoriting Mid-Valley Mutations with Austin Rich: Playlist from March 19, 2024 Favoriting

austinrich's avatar View austinrich's profile Favoriting

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

I met Heather via Roger back in Richmond, VA. Heather was not yet making music at the time but was a big part of 804noise at the time and Roger and I's project IWT. When she started making noise with Roger I was jealous. It was so good and elevated the community with her participation for sure. It’s been so long but feels like just last week that we were organizing 804noise shows and Heather is ever present in my memories of those times. This was a two-day fest in Corvallis, and a LOT of bands from all over the area were at this show. I was there to film / live-stream most of the acts, and while the sound was not great, I did get to record / film a lot of great bands this weekend. This is the set I had to do the most production to make it "broadcast ready."

@Roger: When I saw JUICE MACHINE at Funagain, I was struck by the interplay of your hands as you twirled those knobs. It seemed as though you and Heather were so in synch, you could both reach for whichever knob at any time without colliding. Did you have pre-assigned areas of the equipment, or was it more like a free-for-all and you just danced your hands around each other?
