I learned of Pipa when I went to a Concert in Santa Barbara when I lived there. I knew nothing of the Instruments or Traditions. One first sees the Pipa - a flat piece if wood with a few strings. Well ...what's that gonna do for anybody. The Master began to play - a piece about a Battle from hundreds of years ago - with Anthems & even impressionistic sounds of cannon & conflict. Like Hendrix doing the National Anthem or something - with no electricity & from another epoch of History. Mind blown wide open ! The same then occured as the Erhu was presented : the Chinese violin with just a round dowel for a neck - from which the most plaintive strains were elicited...
