A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

My parents despaired of me and my inability to master German. For instance, I was lifeguarding and these two young men were bouncing more than one bounce on the diving board. Blew my whistle, waved them over and told them once bounce only. They were German and didn't understand. I used my German and said "Du must nicht boinga boinga gehen." I see your mustard / yellow, and raise you boinga boinga. (also can't spell in German, forgive both please)

Yeah, when learning a language it's really important to not be shy, make guesses, not be afraid to make mistakes, etc. While I was living in Hamburg I had some experiences like this - grasping for words - but the educational opportunities were often undermined by the fact that folks over there speak such good English

I remember when my niece was little and she was acquiring new tastes in music. She asked me for my ‘desert island’ singer/band choice, smugly expecting me to say Bowie or Roxy or Sparks, I suppose. Interetsting info from the "Baltimore" album Wikipedia page:

Simone disagreed with Taylor's production choices—particularly his interest in a reggae sound, which first caused Simone to ask "What is this corny stuff?" Simone's dissatisfaction delayed production, but she would eventually record her vocals for the album in a single hour-long sitting.Simone would later recall of the historic barn where Baltimore was recorded "a basement in Belgium where I was forced to sing songs in order to get out of there."
