Death. Mittie Roosevelt died of typhoid fever in the early morning of February 14, 1884, aged 48. On the afternoon of the same day and in the same house, Theodore's first wife, Alice Lee Roosevelt, unexpectedly died of Bright's disease. Alice Roosevelt Longworth, Mittie's granddaughter, had been born two days earlier.

Bright's disease is an archaic term for what is now referred to as 'nephritis'. Nephritis is an inflammation of the kidneys, caused by toxins, infection or autoimmune conditions.

So, I have a report of the double feature I heard this week of Tomas Fujiwara 7 Poets Trio + the Tomeka Reid Quartet. Fujiwara featured Patricia Brennan on vibes and Reid on cello. The compositions were very rhythmic and driving, and there was a lot of head-tapping and foot-nodding in the crowd. Brennan was fantastic, covering the vibes with 4 mallets. I was surprised that it came across as really a vibes trio, with the cello and drums serving mostly as rhythm section.

The quartet had Reid on cello, Fujiwara drums, Jason Roebke on bass, and Mary Halvorson on guitar. Really wonderful. Reid's compositions are surprisingly tuneful and helped to stop me just gazing in wonder at Halvorson's feet to figure out how she was doing all her effects. She is so fluid and musical with her tone-shifting that it is really impressive in person.

I always like Fire!, but I wonder if it should be a guilty pleasure. (Please don't tell me there are no guilty pleasures. Without them I would hardly have any.)

Well heard, tom tom the pipers son. The horn player is also in The Thing, who cover a couple of PJ Harvey tunes.

Good morning! Thanks Jeff, for the Out.
Slept through a good chunk of it this morning but happy for the bits that I get. Happy also for a little extra sleep on a Sunday morning. Life is so complicated.
