Ship wrecks eh? I wrote a novella that was highly inspired by the sinking of the Essex and life in Nantucket at that time. The intro to the book is a recounting of about 5 famous shipwrecks that resulted in Maritine cannibalism. My parents and sisters came to the States on a former Navy ship that transported refugees from Europe. They traveled across the Atlantic for 7 days and arrived early December 1955. The voyage was rough and most everyone stayed down below, but my dad and my sister Judy were on deck watching the gigantic waves without getting seasick. Judy later had a bought with her first husband and they went lobstering in the Long Island Sound. We made a day trip on the boat when I was a kid visiting them. The waters got choppy and I felt queasy, but didn't get sick. My dad loved that trip.

My great uncle and his family crossed in 1922, on the S.S. Mauretania, from Southampton. Departed Oct 28th and arrive on Nov 3rd. I never knew him, but heard vague stories. And indeed, after some digging, the bits I rememberd checked out: he did move to Mishawaka, Indiana, where afaik he was a janitor at the University. I even managed to find a picture of his gravestone. He died in 1972 in Osceola, Indiana.
