Herbie is such an interesting, and I would argue IMPORTANT figure in the popularizing of ethnic sounds and blending them with jazz. He also had a number of avant garde musicians as regularmemembers of his bands.

Took a minute to dawn on me that Monkees version of Words was what I was reeling in from recollection. Background on their recording/release and use of it is slightly complicated, though. Do I recall it because it was featured, I see, in one of the TV episodes in '67? That would seem too passing an encounter -- hearing in a rerun or two in addition to watching show as a wee Monkee fan -- to get so planted.
