I know this isn't historically true at all but: I feel like there's been more notated music for solo instruments and there might not have been if it hadn't been for Braxton, Lacy, et al. pioneering the solo concert

Guessing the real reason is: you write a grant and get some money to pay a composer and then you put on a concert of works by multiple composers. (You can write commission a composer but maybe not a soloist? Foundations like the idea of maybe funding a Pulitzer Prize?)

I feel bad for not often tuning into Observations. I usually take a little breather from FMU & give the servers a break in this timeslot before Marty on the mainstream... Of course it's my loss.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:23pm
doctorjazz:

↳ DJ Peter @7:16
But was Braxton's music notated? I know he named pieces with those symbols and squiggles, but I thought they were just guideposts for the improvisors (or Braxton) to use in the improvisation. (I could be werong here, of course).

Saturday night is a hard time to be on the stream for hours-often doing something, or, as you said, giving my ears a break after a long day of FMU listening (and maybe oaying a little attention to my family, getting some stuff done...)

DJ Peter:

↳ doctorjazz @7:23
I know he used some shapes to indicate long tones, trills, shakes, overblowing, split tones, etc. But I believe that was mostly because he had to sit down and figure out the various possibilities so he could deploy them over the course of a concert. (I recall reading him say that the first time he tried to a solo concert he ran out of tricks very quickly.)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
doctorjazz:

↳ DJ Peter @7:31
Sure, but even the half dozen symbols in the title couldn't accound for the 10-20 minute pieces (at lease, not in all the parts). Unless he gave the musicians scores besides the symbols in the titles (or for himself on the solo pieces).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
Jeff Golick:

Clarinet, marimba, bandoneon, bass. Is alright.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:37pm
DJ Peter:

↳ doctorjazz @7:34
Oh he absolutely had traditional scores (5-line staffs) that he would "title" with the pictures. I'm talking about diagrams that he used to indicate certain gambits, like a sawtooth line to suggest a shake between two pitches..
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:37pm
