Handy Haversack:
One does tend to hear a lot of Puerto Rican music in NYC.
Amazing story: When I first moved to Brooklyn, our terrible BK backyard in our slumlord railroad apartment shared a fence with the nicer backyard of the Dominican family who had the building next door, and we became very friendly with them, especially an uncle, Umberto, who didn't really speak any English but had a beautiful accent in Spanish and LOVED words and talking and was just a super nice guy. That first summer, the three-week build-up to the Puerto Rican Day Parade was particularly raucous, and there was PR music coming from pretty much all directions all the time. Then the day of the parade, complete silence. We're out the backyard later, having a beer, and Umberto comes out. We mention how quiet it is since all the celebrants are in Manhattan at the parade. Umberto says (now mind you, in Spanish -- my roommate's grandparents and mom were Spanish, so he's fluent and translating to me out the side of his mouth as Umberto speaks), "Well, that's the whole thing: Puerto Rican people, all they ever want to do [incredible disparagement just DRIPPING off every syllable) is hang out outside, drink beer, and listen to their music. Dominican people, now, [voice brightens, all smiles, gentle lilt] all we want to do is hang out outside, drink some beers, and listen to our music."
BAM. Mic drop. Not a scintilla of irony when he said it. Just a pure difference of inflection. We were absolutely gobsmacked. And kind of in awe. And immediately gave him a beer.
Ah, twenty-five years ago.

My younger daughter teaches at Passaic Academy for Science and Engineering. Almost all the students are Hispanic (Latin-X; having trouble keeping up with the current proper addresses). They do come from different countries, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Central America. They do have very strong opinions about classmates from different countries (usually not positive), and often expect that MollyJazz can tell which country they're from just from their interactions (she just says, "Hey, I'm white, what do you expect from me?")
