A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

PA drivers get slammed from Jersey people all the time with that & yet whenver I drive in NJ (and I'm from there originnaly & spent years & many many miles on the road working there) I find NJ drivers to be among the worst offenders. Ya, I think that's pretty accurate here on surface streets. all bets are off on the expressways. The State police on the DOT side will pull trucks over with vigor for the slightest thing, but passenger cars get a free reign. My oldest has a flat bed tow truck he uses to pick up cars for his repair shop and he gets pulled over every couple months or so to check his straps on the cars and things like that. He's had more warnings than he can count but never any fine.

We always bag our own stuff. That's just part of carrying your own bags, it seems like. I'm not sure NYC grocery stores ever have the clerks bagging. At least not the ones I go to.

Dan S:

At least with a cashier, if you have a question or a problem, you know there's someone right in front of you to ask. With self-checkout, there might be one store employee for every four machines, trying to deal with multiple problems at once. I have sometimes just stopped the process before paying and walked out, leaving the unpaid stuff there and the store to clean up the mess. I'm talking to you, CVS closest to me.

Human check-out lines. I like mixing my own drinks, but the wait for cust svc to approve the ID on selfers is often very cumbersome, not to mention the snafus encountered when the selfer all of a sudden doesn't wanna co-operate.

really interesting to me that people with anxiety and/or who don't feel like talking to someone enjoy the self-checkout, i didn't really think about that. where i live we have a LOT of people using curbside grocery pick-up where the employee is in the store shopping for you (which is a whole separate issue because those curbside carts take up a lot of space in the store and blocking the way for actual customers and those employees could be cashiers instead)

The good customers make the day easier and better. You learn to roll with the nasty customers, and how to handle them, and often de-escalate their behaviour. Not all the time, but some of the time. Establishing a relationship with all of the customers, builds a better workplace. Worked retail for most of my life.
