Linda Smith  I See Your Face   Favoriting Nothing Else Matters  Feel Good All Over  1995  Linda Smith is an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and home recording artist who began self-releasing cassette albums in the late 1980s. Beginning in the 1990s, some of her recordings were released in vinyl and CD form on indie labels such as Slumberland Records and Harriet Records. In the 1980s, prior to her solo career, Smith was in a New York City band called the Woods. Other bands that included Smith were the Window Shoppers and Yours Truly.  0:02:00 (Pop-up)
Chandra  Kate   Favoriting Transportation  Go Go Records  1980  Chandra recorded her first EP in 1980 at age 12. Her father, artist/professor Dennis Oppenheim, was a teacher of Eugenie Diserio, whose bands played at parties at Chandra's family's loft. Chandra is currently performing and is behind the fantastic label We Are Time.  0:04:47 (Pop-up)
Deep Tan  Xenomorph Queen   Favoriting Xenomorph Queen Single  Practice Music  2023  One of my favourite new bands! ""xenomorph queen" witnesses the real star of the alien franchise in a new context: in the throes of a lesbian romance. a sensual – but still punk – track about matriarchy, queer parenting and sapphic love, this close encounter offers a new, intergalactic perspective on #hotmilfsinyourarea #xenomilf They have also been touring with QOTSA.  0:10:35 (Pop-up)
SIC  Voltage Control   Favoriting Voltage Control 7"  Artibano  1979  SIC were a post-punk band from the industrial city of Charleroi in the francophone part of Belgium. They were formed by Francis Pourcel, Alain Neffe (Bene Gesserit), Micheline Dufert, and Mario Berchicci in 1977. Francis and Alain had previously played with Krautrock band Kosmose in the mid 70s.  0:12:29 (Pop-up)
Q4U  Böring   Favoriting Q1  Gramm  1982  Q4U was born the winter of 1980-1981 in Reykjavík, inspired by the British punk movement. It’s original members were Elínborg Halldórsdóttir (Ellý) (vocals), Berglind Garðarsdóttir (Linda) (vocals), Steinþór Stefánsson (guitar), Gunnþór Sigurðsson (bass), Helgi (drums) and Már (synthesizer). Helgi and Már soon left the band and Helgi was replaced by Kormákur Geirharðsson (Kommi) on the drums. Q4U began with a stylish, aggressive punk image before experimenting with drum machines and synthesizers, which almost nobody did in Reykjavík at the time. The later sound had gothic leanings, often compared with Siouxsie and the Banshees and Xmal Deutschland. Their body of work is united by the powerful vocals of Ellý, who mostly sings in Icelandic about controversial, political experiences, much like Ari Up of The Slits.  0:15:05 (Pop-up)
Oh-Ok  Brother   Favoriting Wow Mini Album  DB Discs  1982  Oh-OK was an American musical group from Athens, Georgia, formed in 1981 with singer/lyricist Linda Hopper, bassist/vocalist/lyricist Lynda Stipe, and drummer David Pierce. Other members later included drummer David McNair and guitarist Matthew Sweet. The trio began practicing together at parties in the college community in the spring of 1981. Their first club performance break came when Stipe's brother, Michael Stipe of R.E.M., needed an opening band for a show at the 40 Watt Club.  0:17:36 (Pop-up)
Suburban Lawns  Green Eyes   Favoriting Suburban Lawns  Capitol Records  1981  Suburban Lawns were an American post-punk band formed in Long Beach, California in 1978 by CalArts students William "Vex Billingsgate" Ranson and Sue "Su Tissue" McLane. They later recruited Richard "Frankie Ennui" Whitney, Charles "Chuck Roast" Rodriguez, and John "John Gleur" McBurney. Their musical performances included creative costumes with Su Tissue delivering, according to Ennui a "full mind blowing impact". Though music journalists found her performances confusing, that she "looked so bored and uncomfortable standing on stage with all of these boys that looked like they were having so much fun"...  0:19:04 (Pop-up)
Kleenex/Lilliput  Split   Favoriting Kleenex/Lilliput First Songs  Kill Rock Stars  2016  LiLiPUT's exuberant sound combined spirited thrashy punk with unconventional vocals and lyrics, both in English and German. Their music featured husky or squealing vocals, ramshackle drums, scratchy and twanging guitar, thick funky bass, saxophone and occasionally flute, violin, or other instruments. The cut-up surreality of their lyrics and energetic sound put them in a league with bands like The Raincoats (frequent tour partners), Delta 5, The Slits, Essential Logic and Bush Tetras. The band's sound developed throughout their career, due in part to line-up changes; the earlier recordings are more noisy and energetic, while the later songs are more complex and haunting.  0:21:57 (Pop-up)

The Buttress  Brutus   Favoriting Brutus Single  The Buttress  2-16  Bethany Schmitt, known professionally as Buttress (aka The Buttress) is an American Rapper. The New Jersey native's music explores religious themes and radical feminism. She has released two albums, Behind Every Great Man (2014) and ENDOFUNCTOR (2023). Her most well-known song, Brutus, is a retelling of the assassination of Julius Caesar, from the perspective of a female Brutus. The followup song, Rex, explores the aftermath of Brutus's actions and their effects on Rome. Buttress also runs Phenomonology Club, a group dedicated to the study and discussion of phenomenology.  0:30:57 (Pop-up)
Mandy, Indiana  Bottle Episode   Favoriting Bottle Episode Single  Fire Talk  2021  Buried found sound samples, sprawling percussive experiments are arranged via oblique references to film soundtrack strategies and experimental video games.. "We take inspiration from films where the language of cinema is disrupted," explains Fair, who takes Julia Ducournau's narrative detournements as a key influence. "We want to alter textures, create clashes, and craft those moments when what you're expecting to happen never comes – by subverting expectations you keep an audience on its toes."  0:34:40 (Pop-up)
Fever Ray  Even It Out   Favoriting Radical Romantics  Rabid Records  2023  If you needed another reason not to get on Karin Dreijer’s bad side, look no further than “Even It Out.” However fictional the child murder fantasy may, though, the song comes from a real place of regret. “I wish I had been more thorough with the principal and the teachers,” they said. “We were in meetings and meetings and meetings, talking about how to take care of this, how they were trying to solve this situation, but they never did. So it ended up that my kid had to change schools. That’s something I still feel very bad about. That’s something you feel as a parent: that you’re never doing enough. “So this [song] is a bit like going back and trying to make things right,” they continued. “I think it’s so important to take back your self-respect when you have been wronged. It’s a very tricky thing: How do you overcome a situation like this? When will you ever feel okay about it? There has to be some punishment for a person who behaves like this, for a bully, and it didn’t really happen.”  0:38:53 (Pop-up)
Chewy She  Je suis nue il est habillé   Favoriting Run After Boyz  Chewy She  2022  The wonky carnival that is CHEWY SHE is a Lynchian utopia, which radiates innocence despite its absurdist critiques of the modern world. This spirit is best expressed at their live shows, which feature exuberant costumes, supreme musicianship, and the initiation of all present into the darkly ironical, theatrical, and immersive universe of CHEWY SHE.  0:41:55 (Pop-up)
Lena Platonos  What's New Pussycat?   Favoriting Galop  Lyra  1985  Lena Platonos is a Greek pianist and composer of electronic and art music. She took a leading role in the Athens electronic music scene of the 1980s, and her work has constituted a lasting inspiration for Greek electronic musicians in the subsequent decades.  0:46:22 (Pop-up)
Elisa Waut  Russia   Favoriting Elisa Waut  Virgin Records  1985  Band originating from Bruges who have built a reasonably successful career with their tasteful, civilized pop music. Originated as an experiment of brother and sister Elsje and Hans Helewaut, the band takes form after they team up with bass-player Chery Derycke, who was in the punk & coolwave band Red Zebra before that. With their love for such artists as Jacques Brel, Edith Piaf, Judy Garland and Joy Division, and the looks and the voice of Elsje, they make clear pop-music with distinct influences of jazz. The attitude toward the music is always poetic and sensitive. The lyrics of Els also play a major part in that : no “I love you”-crap but subtle and introverted stories about life and what to expect of it.  0:50:10 (Pop-up)

Water From Your Eyes  When You're Around   Favoriting Structure  Wharf Cat Records  2021  Album opener “When You’re Around” marks Structure’s cleanest break with Water From Your Eyes’ past, and the clearest indication of how far their irreverence for genre and form has carried them. At first listen, the disarmingly straightforward psychedelic pop tune could be mistaken for a test of how subtly they can troll a crowd with a hammed-up pastiche. A single piano chord stutters to life before surf-rock crooning glides in, swimming over a light, shuffling beat. Gentle horns, courtesy of New York DIY mainstay Matt Norman, guide you around a coy self-reference (“There is water in my eyes and I'm alive”) and into a swooning chorus. “I hear your voice and save it for later,” Brown sings, allowing the slightest crack to enter their typically cool delivery. It’s the kind of windswept, golden-hour confession that melts your heart in the moment and haunts you forever when love turns cold. For a band who have coyly dismissed their own work as “weed music,” it’s frightening how sharply they can make a ballad cut when they drop the act and go for broke.  0:59:06 (Pop-up)
