Full fingerprints in the UK when I registered as a student there; part of getting on the student health program there and it sure saved my butt. I was very compliant and literally got fingerprinted and registered within 72 hours of landing. Which is good because I promptly got a UTI 2 days after that and a serious sinus infection a few days after I stopped the antibiotics for the UTI. People like to piss on the NHS but let me tell you it was seamless, efficient, and AVAILABLE. When I brought my first prescription to a pharmacy, the pharmacist heard my accent and started to inform me of the out of pocket costs etc....I took out my little green booklet and he said "oh, nevermind, good on you...." Apparently a lot of American students doing a year abroad never bothered to properly register with the authorities and like clockwork, the pharmacies closest to the dorms were constantly telling pissed off self-entitled Yanks that no, their meds are not covered (and nor were any doc visits outside of the crappy student clinic if you had to see a specialist etc). Remember laying out 2 quid and change for any scrip in the UK -- about $5 back then when the pound was 2x stronger than the dollar. Like everything else in the 80s though I was able to get by on very little; the local Indian student cantine had a daily bowl of something good either with rice or a naan for 3 pounds and change and if I wanted to eat in the student cafeteria it was less than 2 pounds per meal. But I digress!

Full fingerprints in the UK when I registered as a student there; part of getting on the student health program there and it sure saved my butt. I was very compliant and literally got fingerprinted and registered within 72 hours of landing. Which is good because I promptly got a UTI 2 days after that and a serious sinus infection a few days after I stopped the antibiotics for the UTI. People like to piss on the NHS but let me tell you it was seamless, efficient, and AVAILABLE. When I brought my first prescription to a pharmacy, the pharmacist heard my accent and started to inform me of the out of pocket costs etc....I took out my little green booklet and he said "oh, nevermind, good on you...." Apparently a lot of American students doing a year abroad never bothered to properly register with the authorities and like clockwork, the pharmacies closest to the dorms were constantly telling pissed off self-entitled Yanks that no, their meds are not covered (and nor were any doc visits outside of the crappy student clinic if you had to see a specialist etc). Remember laying out 2 quid and change for any scrip in the UK -- about $5 back then when the pound was 2x stronger than the dollar. Like everything else in the 80s though I was able to get by on very little; the local Indian student cantine had a daily bowl of something good either with rice or a naan for 3 pounds and change and if I wanted to eat in the student cafeteria it was less than 2 pounds per meal. But I digress!
