With billows and blasts from choirs and orchesters
Buskers and talkers

Favoriting December 3, 2023: Silke Eberhard, Mike Cooper, and Nino Rota
A 3-parter at El Clubo del Storkerino today: 1. Alto sax, clarinet and bass clarinet player and composer Silke Eberhard, who’s got a gig coming this week not a mile from the Stork Club. Somewhat Dolphy-influenced but with a powerful voice of her own. 2. Mike Cooper had another busy year, travelling, gigging, recording, and releasing new stuff mostly with his lap-steel guitar and electronics. We’ll hear from a lovely tribute album to Lol Coxhill -as yet unreleasd - featuring Mike, using only electronics, duetting with a raft of fine sax players. 3. Buon compleanno, Nino Rota! The great composer from Milano is 112 today - music from the original movie soundtracks, and more….

Lucky for everyone, I always travel with multiple pens (once a journalist, always a journalist), I only hang out in the finest seedy joints, and next to mass transit, my other favorite mode of transport is sharing a cab. ⦿Sun in ♐︎Sagittarius, Year of Metal 🐖Boar
' Giovanni Rota Rinaldi (Italian: [dʒoˈvanni ˈrɔːta riˈnaldi]; 3 December 1911 – 10 April 1979), better known as Nino Rota (IPA: [ˈniːno]), was an Italian composer, pianist, conductor and academic who is best known for his film scores, notably for the films of Federico Fellini and Luchino Visconti. He also composed the music for two of Franco Zeffirelli's Shakespeare screen adaptations, and for the first two installments of Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather trilogy, earning the Academy Award for Best Original Score for The Godfather Part II (1974).
During his long career, Rota was an extraordinarily prolific composer, especially of music for the cinema. He wrote more than 150 scores for Italian and international productions from the 1930s until his death in 1979 — an average of three scores each year over a 46-year period, and in his most productive period from the late 1940s to the mid-1950s he wrote as many as ten scores every year, and sometimes more, with a remarkable thirteen film scores to his credit in 1954. Alongside this great body of film work, he composed ten operas, five ballets and dozens of other orchestral, choral and chamber works, the best known being his string concerto. He also composed the music for many theatre productions by Visconti, Zeffirelli and Eduardo De Filippo as well as maintaining a long teaching career at the Liceo Musicale in Bari, Italy, where he was the director for almost 30 years. fred, listenmissy and I saw Dancing With Glass at the Joyce last night: a selection of Philip Glass' piano etudes, half with dance, half with piano alone. There was an extraordinary duet by Batsheva alums Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber, and a tap number in which one of the dancers came down off the stage to take Maki Namekawa's place at the piano. Super cool stuff.

* Saraghinazerac

2oz Glen Passaic, plus a little more
1 sugar cube
1 splash seltzer
3 dashes Peychaud's bitters
1/2oz absinthe
lemon peel

In a chilled rocks glass, swirl absinthe to coat, discarding excess into nearest French Impressionist or impressionable little boy. In a mixing glass, muddle sugar cube with soda water until fully dissolved. Add Glen Passaic, bitters, and ice, and stir with a glass rod to the tempo of a rhumba until rod bends like memory under the sway of desire, about 30 seconds. Strain into the absinthe-coated rocks glass, and garnish with lemon peel.

Welcome, my Lord most outlandish! That's the second time in 4 days that "halberd" has come up in conversation - the first time in English. A student said it in German - had to look it up though it's nearly the same word. I simply couldn't believe he had used it.
