On the book end, I'm giving a big thumbs up to the first half of Thurston Moore's book Sonic Life. Fascinating firsthand account of the punk/noise scene in NYC in the 70's. Really great stories. The second half goes downhill as he completely wimps out on his own story and the end of his band. I was always slightly skeptical about SY and now I'm even more so. Am I wrong?

Big Sonic Youth fan, but I'm gonna hold off on buying Thurston's book until I see it second hand. Private life aside I believe Thurston is a total art/music nerd, sincere in his loves. I just read an interview with filmmaker/musician Michael Snow and he seemed impressed by Moore and Lee Renaldo's love of music and art. For me the most fun thing about seing SY live was Steve Shelley. I've seen him with several other bands, most recently with Bush Tetras, and he is always amazing.

Rhino records had meant a lot in my life. The first and most impressionable release I can remember buying was a cassette of New Orleans rhythm and blue volume 3, while on a family vacation as a pre teen. That tape lived in the car player along with the Beatles and Jim Croce tapes on family car trips for years. The sound, of basically Allen Toussaint’s version of the New Orleans swing, lodged itself in my brain and never left. It still probably makes me instantly happy more than any music. Barefootin, mother-in-law, and the guttarly funky, non-Toussaint produced, down home girl set the stage for my eventual brief time living in NO at 19 years old. Oh yeah and the Soul Shots comps are the best compiled and mastered r&b/soul comps period! Fight me on that! Ok I’m done now
