I was just gonna ask about this collection. The only rai I know from Sidi Bel Abbes is the group Raina Rai. But I remember being told that that city has a more guitar-based approach to rai than Oran. This track certainly bears that out!

I first heard rai on the tape comp "Rai Rebels" on Earthworks/Virgin rec. 1988. Khaled & band are in a photo on the cover. I still have the tape, it plays well. Come over my place some night for a tape partee...

I saw Cheb Khaled in SF in 1990 or 91, after Rai Rebels came out but before the Don Was-produced album came out. Saw him a few more times in the 90s/00s - at Sterne Grove in SF, at Berkeley Community Theatre, and once at a soccer field in Marrakech.

Years later I saw the film "1, 2, 3 Soleils" with Khaled, Faudel, Rachid Taha. A Paris concert in '98. Fine show. Infectious. One part of the band was an electric rock type combo adjacent to a large trad Arab orchestra.
I first saw it in a college movie theater. Arab and Black African exchange students attended and danced in the aisles, onstage!

This sounds Moroccan. A lot of Moroccan singers started going as Cheb or Cheba in the late 90s/early 2000s. I mean mainstream pop/chaabi singers, that is. There had been Chebs and Chebas in Oujda since I think the late 80s. Oujda is pretty close to Oran, and the regional traditions are similar.
