A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

Good Hello.

Mildred:

I haven't deliberately listened to this show yet... but everytime i see the name go by... I think about this memory of mine and i wonder if the name is related to the region and the way the station is sortof half broadcast there... when i was a kid in the mid (hudson) valley and i would listen to fmu... but i didnt know it was wfmu yet either. It was just one of these fuzzy stations that would come in and out and like alternate with another station depending on what side of a hill you were on our if you touched the antenna or something... and that was where and when i began to realize that it was fun to mix things up.

Some of the album are things re-made from the show. But some things on the album are only on the album. And some stuff in the show is ONLY in the show...

I mentioned this last time, but for anyone who is new this time: TJ Teru is played by Bill Raymond. Angel lips is played by Robin Karfo. Rodant Kapoor is played by Tom Stewart. And Ruby is played by Laura Esterman. Moliere is played by Fred Neuman. Some of the cast are still acting, and have been in a ton of movies and TV shows. But they always come back for a new series or Ruby.

All the music is by composer and electronic musician Tim Clark. He has solo work, but most of his career has been spent working on ZBS shows.

They charge a lot... but also... all the shows are available for free, in a number of ways. But when you pay, you get a nice physical artifact that is pretty worth it, and you help support ZBS. But yes: there is a contradiction, for sure.

I'll have to try to Google that. Blackstar being the last album, there was so little interest or energy in the more in depth interviews and press releases, on Bowie's part, as I understand, that came with, e.g, Outside. I haven't run across any Blackstar era interviews, understandably. But maybe I should look harder, just in case there's something out there.

I worked in a Halloween store one year. It happened to be a scam; I never got my last paychecks, but "gift cards" good in other Halloween stores. I soon discovered there was a class-action lawsuit, involving all the employees who were also angry for similar treatment. I've been meaning to write about it; working in that store was bonkers.

Yeah. This sounds more like a traditional radio drama. I think they were experimenting, looking for different ways to present Ruby. They eventually settled on the "short" installments, which they have stuck with. But this is a nice anomaly of another possibility for the character.

They had some philosophical reasons for giving it all away for free for years. They were originally a "Radio Commune," and it was sort of born out of hippy nonsense in the late 60's. But then they all got serious about actually making radio shows, regularly, and the commune part fell away. But they had a lot of hippy ethics that they still sort of believe.
