Very sad to hear about Charles Gayle. I was lucky to have heard him live several times. In one particularly memorable performance I heard him with Milford Graves. Steve Dalachinsky wrote a book of poems about CG The Final Nite & Other Poems; The Complete Notes from a Charles Gayle Notebook.

Monk would likely lose his mind over this reharmonized 'Round Midnight.

Have really liked Burrell for a long while, haven't ever caught him in concert, hopefully at some point...

Will have to go back and listen to the Richard Davis section in the archives...(what I get for sleeping in...)

and seemed Burrell interpolated something else in there but will have to come back to listen again. Was peeling boiled eggs at the time so I may be wrong.

Jeff Golick:

Giving you a warped view of Burrell via this set. He also led one of the most extreme, completely bonkers BYG/Actuel releases of '69, in Echo.

↳ Song: "Booking in My Dreams" by "Dave Burrell"
HE Has this interesting way of smearing notes with his left hand, a bit like Don Pullen sometimes, but very much Burrell's...

Jeff Golick:

Burrell, like Jaki Byard, always has some stride DNA in there.

The problem with going back to archives is, there are usually some great real time shows going on that you miss, TOO MUCH GREAT WFMU/DRUMMER, I TELL YOU!!!!

Ellingtonia is threaded throughout today's show: again to your (Jeff's) point about the tradition.

Anything evokes Monk finds favor where I sit...
Seems like he has a fundamental Melodicism - but there's always a frisson of it going Free @ certain moments. Which if I read that would actually remind me of SunRa even ...tho this doesn't to speak of ...not sure where any of that lands with the better-informed...

Hey everybody: the main drummer page doesn't (yet) link to my 7pm playlist, so I'm going to plug that in here: wfmu.org...

A few Burrell records on Denon records-they're primarily a Stereo Equipment manufacture, but they did release some interesting/fine records at one point.

DRUMMER STREAM SUNDAY PROGRAMMING ALERT

Not only are we adding a brand-new program to the Sunday lineup -- THE LAUGHING CLOCK with DJ PETER (wfmu.org...). But beginning next week, the The Stork Club is going to reduce to three hours and Ritual Music is going to begin an hour earlier and air for four hours!
