By online, do you mean the photo of Charles Gayle as Streets in the Drummer Daily Email or Doug has other online presence.

True confession here, I did not know of Gayle's "Streets" persona. Have a few of his recordings and saw him a few times at Vision Festival and most memorably saw him do an alto sax solo in a park as part of AFA In Gardens series that they do this time of the year every year. I can't remember the notes that Gayle played that day in the park but remember that first he connected with the park and the background sounds of the city and then he connected with those of us nearby listening intently. Beautiful and deeply moving.

sigh. so many goodbyes. Richard Davis.

Just thought about all these recent goodbyes to great musicians we've had for so long and contrast with those who were already too soon gone when I was discovering the music in the 70s. Coltrane, Dolphy, Ayler. Too soon followed by Kirk and Mingus and others.

OK, I need to get some caffeine and move on with the day. Time's a wasting.

Dean:

When we were apartment hunting in Berkeley in the early '00s, we visited a house whose owner was letting the bottom floor. My wife recognized the young landlord, a classmate at Lawrence University, which has a respectable music conservatory, where the landlord had studied. We talked about the coincidence. He announced that he had since studied with Davis, which impressed me mightily. We ended up not able to take the lease, because my records wouldn't fit.

My resistance to double-blind A/B audio equipment tests--cables, say--has to do with the fact that I don't listen like that, in a formalized experimental context. Further, one comes to learn about the sound of gear over time, weeks or months. The tests are scientifically sound (pardon the pun), but phenomenologically infelicitous.

Can I share a remarkable paragraph from an email I just got? "After Lee Konitz passed away early in the pandemic, Ohad Talmor was called in to go through Konitz's musical belongings. During that process, he and drummer George Schuller discovered three DAT tapes which documented rehearsals that took place at Ornette Coleman’s loft in May 1998. It was Ornette and Lee together with Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins, rehearsing new music that Ornette had just written for an upcoming concert at the Umbria Jazz Festival. They played the music at Umbria and never again to anyone's knowledge."
