I believe it had more to do with the format war between the 45 rpm single, created by RCA Victor, and the 33 1/3 rpm LP, created by Columbia. The 45 was launched a year or so later than the 33, and I believe that RCA went with the larger spindle hole in an attempt to prevent other manufacturers making dual-speed machines capable of playing both formats. Eventually, sense prevailed and it was realized that the 2 formats were complementary not competitive.
