Kerouac is totally fundamental for me. But not necessarily for 'On The Road' ! While obviously understanding the impact right after it was published on what would become all the Hippies & Rawk Artists... But then I suppose it's all the Vanity of Duluoz - all his Works go together as his Biography - or rather his Sutra as Commentary on it...

I have The Beat Generation, the Rhino box set. It paints a balance picture of the entire Beat community in their own words. Kerouac comes off as warm, thoughtful and highly intelligent. Unlike the hatchet job the straight media of the day did on him.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm

Kerouac was a novelist whose Prose happened to be more Poetic than most people's Poetry.
Ginsberg of course was explicit that he did for the length of a Poem with Howl what Kerouac did for whole Novels. & Burroughs that Jakc was the first to assert without equivocation that He Was A Writer.
Which doesn't gainsay your point.

i do think if i'd read that as a teenager it might've had something to offer me.

Any number of reasons Kerouac matters to me so much... We're both North NewEngland French babies - who crossed the country to California. & came back...
We're both emotive Water Signs... & Mystics. His Process & Form were obviously brave & innovative - & his Theory of Spontaneous Prose ...altogether this was the most Subversive (even literally as Beneath the Verse) thing that can ever be done in a Society: reveal that Everything Is Poetry...
