Tapes, 99% aren't. Vinyl, a high percentage aren't.
How does it work when the tape/vinyl is not pressed by Bandcamp? Does the artist need to send it him/herself?
Yup, Bandcamp just acts like Shopify or Instacart. Artist/label sends stuff out.
Are there some 'press-on-demand' options you can recommend?
Press-on-demand are often prohibitively expensive. The more albums you press the lower per-unit cost.
I have an album I want to release but I figure that being such a new artist on the platform It would be pretty difficult to have a 250 units (for vinyl) as a first pledge to achieve, therefore, I'm looking for alternatives or simply your opinions and recommendations.
250 units is a lot! Unless you have a large fanbase it'll be hard to move that many copies. Maybe try a Kickstarter campaign. That way you can gauge interest and if there isn't enough you aren't out any money.
