Frankly, I think the reporting is in bad faith. The Times reports, as if it were mere fact: "The statement that all of their facial expressions convey unmistakably? Defiance." How does the reporter know? Even if it were so, so what? There's something admirable about telling the criminal justice system to screw itself, even if you are indeed a crook.
