Notes:
Our third show of 2018 found us at Main At South Side (MASS) in Fort Worth, on the bill with Hen and the Cocks (henandthecocks.bandcamp.com) and Rock N Roll Cannibals (rocknrollcannibals.com) (both from Denton), and SHARPY (sharpymusic.bandcamp.com). MASS is a great music room with a quality sound system and a brilliant sound engineer (thanks Mark!). We were excited to take the stage that night, and planned to debut a new song mid-set.
The song was intended as a tip of the hat to one of our heroes, the generally-cranky and usually-brilliant Mark E. Smith of The Fall. Photos from recent gigs by The Fall had shown MES to be in poor health, performing seated in a wheelchair. Thinking about what a drag it is getting old, we wrote โHip Priestโs Hip Replacementโ and worked it up quickly in late December 2017. An early iPhone demo of the song is included in this monthโs goodies. Lyrically, the song โborrowedโ from song titles and phrases from The Fall. Musically, it rode a surfy riff into an explosive shouting chorus. We though it fitting.
By the time of the MASS gig on January 20, we were ready to debut HPHR, and did so without screwing it up too badly. I think MES would have approved, though heโd never have admitted it.
On the 24th of January, the world learned of MESโs death. One of our friends suggested that โHip Priestโs Hip Replacementโ might have been the direct cause of his death. Up to that point, we were blissfully unaware that we held that sort of power, but upon recognition of such, we informed our friend that we were going to write a song about him, and if he wasnโt nice to us weโd play it and see what happens.
HPHR has been a staple in our sets ever since. We recorded two versions of it for the โKirvin Streetmanโs Sugar Bride Bluesโ album. One made it onto the album, and the alternate take (โHPHR Slow Recoveryโ) was a bonus track and has appeared on an Aldora Britain Records compilation. Weโre including it in this monthโs goodies too.
Our lawyer loves this song. We have not been sued by the lawyers representing the estate of Mark E. Smith, so we assume they love it too. Hope you dig it as well.
Growing old sucks, so at least do it disgracefully.
