On Scrambled Premium Cable Channels (from Reddit):

ELI5: in the 90's when we watched "scrambled porn" on static TV channels, why would a boob show up every once in awhile?

My friend had cable, my house didn't have cable, I remember having a static channel that was black and white and I've seen a few boobs on that, but my friends TV had colored static, a little bit more luxurious. Why did the porn come through a tiny bit?

www.reddit.com...

david55555 explains:

It is because of how they did the encryption.

The modern way to do this is to apply encryption to every single pixel. This kind of digital encryption means that you don't have any correlation between adjacent pixels and so no information can be recovered without the key:

www.toshiba-europe.com...

The encryption they used merely replaced the Hsync/Vsync data with encrypted data. The actual analog signal stream was not affected. This was simpler to decode, but weakened the encryption. Entire scanlines were still "in the clear" they just were in the wrong place on the screen. If a dozen or so scanlines were shifted right and down by approximately the same number of pixels then that section of the screen would be easily seen and understood.

That is not to say this encryption didn't accomplish its purpose or wasn't effective. The only people who tried to watch the movie through the encryption were the 13 year old boys like yourself who couldn't pay for the PPV anyways. So no revenue was lost, and the hardware they had to ship with all the decoders was that much cheaper. All in all, a better system than trying to do full digital encryption with 1980s hardware.

One was in this music class. And we were doing a variety of things including a bit of key board. We had the opportunity to try soloing using parts of the blues scale.

At the end of class my Professor told me that I was good at soloing. And he wasn’t talking about technique. I don’t remember exactly what he said but I think he was talking about like what I put into it. Or just like melody.

I gotta read through all of Alan Moore. He's technically the best comic book writer ever, I think.

That work is currently in print without Moore's name on it. I'm unsure why, but it's credited to "The Original Writer".

Is it published by DC? Because he refuses to have h is name associated with DC because they dicked him so hard.

Alan Moore's Light Of Thy Countenance is a very quick read at less than 50 pages, and it's all about the power of television. I wish that Moore would write a new book or comic about the history of radio.

No! Ironically, Miracleman is now owned by Marvel!
In the 80's, Marvel coerced the title's change from "Marvelman", which was the original name of the British 1950's character it revived!
