I used to have this LP. Unfortunately, using pure sine waves like this is the worst way to present intervals, because part of what makes intervallic harmony work is the overlap of OVERTONES. And sine waves ("pure tones") are the only sound with NO OVERTONES. Oops!

Handy Haversack:

On day, what, three? of the blackout, our friend Bill called from his LES apartment, bored, asking if he could come over just for something to do. I said sure, and he walked over the Wburg Bridge. He hit the Brooklyn side and started walking north, and as he did the power started coming back on, and it was rolling about a block ahead of him as he walked, so he came north to the sound of cheering! We then went to an air-conditioned bar!

Eating ice cream and drinking beer by moon shadow that first night when it was still magical and everyone was relieved it wasn't terrorism was a great time.

I guess this means it's been twenty years since I walked east across the Queensboro Bridge. Supposedly they plan on turning that civic emergency lane into a pedestrian lane at some point. We marched west across it and blocked traffic during the summer of 2020.

Walked home from work near Columbus Circle. Since we had a landline, we were once again the nerve center for information, just like on September 11. I took some turns directing traffic as I walked across town to the Queensboro and joined the parade in the civic emergency outer lane. K8 says she'd never seen moon shadow in the city before that night of free beer and ice cream.

The bodega where we got that beer and ice cream is now a fancy hipster provisions sandwich shop. The bar we went to is now a super-fancy high-end Taiwanese chicken restaurant. The studio where my friend lived on the LES is now a fancy bakery.

Plus ça change, I guess.

i don't know much about Morressey's being a prick, but his fantasic ego and self-centeredness cause him to ruin the majority of smiths material.
that said, they were an excellent band and he was or is an excellent lyricist. i find his singing/moaning particularly more tolerable on the meat is murder album, for whatever reason. maybe the musical compositions lean away from the lightness of much of their other songs. I always thought the track 'ry cooder' was a pun as a cooter is a turtle in the South (there's a cooter fest about 45 miles from here in FL)

Tortoise named themselves after John Fahey's record label, so it's possible they just liked Ry and wanted to tribute him

i quite enjoyed that blackout. we made a fire in a steel drum in a parking lot right in the middle of town - talking to cops with a bottle of whiskey in my hand, free food from a local business, playing drums and acoustic guitars all night...

northguineahills:

I had a job where I set my own hours. I was just about to work, when the work power went out (i was in bed-stuy). Our neighbors told us to stay inside as they expected rioting like in '79. But, we needed beer, so, we walked to Pratt, and then finally Myrtle Ave trying to find a bodega open w/ beer. We bought as much as we could carry. went back home, and just drank and smoked on the roof all night. It was a fun and hot night...

Someone (I think Jim Carroll?) wrote about a kid back in the '60s who was playing hooky from school and passing the time before getting home, whacking power poles with a stick as he passed them. As he got to the last one on the block, he whacked it, and all power on the East Coast went out. Already feeling guilty, he ran home crying, "I did it! It was me!"
Good story but not as epic as yours.
