Depeche Mode/Wet Leg  Wagging Tongue   Favoriting Wagging Tongue Remixes  Venusnote  2023  Wet Leg put their signature stamp on Depeche Mode’s ‘Wagging Tongue’, off their latest album ‘Memento Mori’. The remix trades in Depeche Mode’s gloom for a glitzier, more colourful interpretation that transforms Dave Gahan’s vocals into a dreamier instrument. ‘Wagging Tongue’ features on Depeche Mode’s latest offering, ‘Memento Mori’. That album – their first since bandmate Andy Fletcher’s passing last year – scored a four-star review from NME‘s Thomas Smith, who wrote: “To have an album of this quality after what the band have been through may seem miraculous, but Depeche Mode have always turned turmoil, tension and life’s darker moments into magic. ‘  *   0:06:11 (Pop-up)
Flamingods  Gutterball   Favoriting Gutterball EP  The Liquid Label  2023  Flamgingods new album drops in October and this is the second single from the London/Bahrain based quartet. Singer Kamal Rasool’s lost his dad to Covid during the writing process, which had a notable impact on the LP’s direction. New single “Gutterball” packs a punch – exploring political dissatisfaction through surrealist lyricism and a potent, accelerating groove. Rasool elaborates; “Gutterball came to be simply by us wanting to create a Middle Eastern inspired punk / new wave track that would kill when we played it live. We hooked up our Turkish Saz guitar to a tonne of fuzz and looped distorted bass and synthesizers over Sam’s repetitively tight beats. I wanted to mess around with political/satirical themes for the song, looking to protests and revolution for inspiration.. The mantra of the song is ‘Spit it out’ – if something is rotten you don’t swallow it.”    0:10:51 (Pop-up)
Strange Flesh  Very   Favoriting Very - EP  Strange Flesh  2023  Taking aim at societal standards as to how a life ‘ought’ to be lived, 'Very' is the anthem of a woman on her own deliciously precarious path: the soundtrack to beloved but ill-paying employment, discount decadence, no children, and a healthy disregard for the future. Varrick Zed: vocals Ed Zed: synths, drums, vocals, various noises. They are from Brooklyn, NY. 79,5  B.D.F.Q   Favoriting       The New York City band sounds like someone spinning a radio dial with such passionate intensity that all the stations blend together into a single, transcendent, almost spiritual force. It’s disco to the beat of modern house; it’s a Supremes cover of a Cardi B banger; it’s Roland Kirk playing jazz through one saxophone, funk through another, and the most earwormy pop tune the 1970’s could muster through a third. n general, the theme of love. Despite all the roughness and sexual desire (“B.D.F.Q.”), the sincere search for it resonates in many of the songs on this album. Who would want to return to the solitude of their own four walls after a debauched club night? According to the band, the very existence of the album is a protest against the “old boy’s club” in the music industry. And a personal triumph against all odds, illuminating the most beautiful collaboration between friends.    0:18:18 (Pop-up)

2023

There is some question as to whether he actually did many of his famous arrangements, with some claiming that many of his productions were actually ghostwritten by other composers...In a 1981 interview with Soundtrack magazine, Baxter said that these sorts of statements were the results of a smear campaign by a disgruntled orchestrator. Furthermore, the Les Baxter papers, which are housed at the University of Arizona, show a significant number of arrangements in his own hand...including those he did for Yma Sumac.

Gang Of Four  I Found That Essence Rare   Favoriting The Peel Sessions Album: Gang of Four  Strange Fruit / Radio 1  1979 / 1990  This Peel Session version was recorded Jan 9, 1979, and later was released on Gang of Four's "Entertainment!" debut album that would be released some months later in 1979. "Entertainment! has been recognized as a seminal post-punk album. It has also been described musically as dance-punk and art punk. The album was co-produced by King and Gill along with Rob Warr, their band manager at the time. King's lyrics were heavily influenced by Situationism, feminism, and the effect of alienation on personal life; a unifying notion is that "the personal is political". Topics include commodification ("Natural's Not in It", "Return the Gift"), proletarian life ("At Home He's a Tourist"), Great Man theory ("Not Great Men"), Special Category Status prisoners in Northern Ireland ("Ether"), and the impact of media reporting of acts of terrorism and Maoist guerrilla warfare in Latin America ("5.45"). A number of songs apply these themes to challenge traditional concepts of love and love songs ("Anthrax", "Contract") and sex ("Damaged Goods", "I Found That Essence Rare"). In his 2014 monograph on the album, Kevin J. H. Dettmar likens the album to James Joyce's Ulysses, saying; "both are concerned with the importance of narrative, of storytelling, as a mode of experiencing the world... that the stories we tell ourselves about "the way things are"—a body of stories that in another context we might call ideology—profoundly shape our experiences of the world."    0:27:00 (Pop-up)
The Nightingales  Start From Scratch   Favoriting Pigs On Purpose  Cherry Red  1982  This song reminds me of "I Found That Essence Rare"... Am I alone in this? --- "Nightingales (a.k.a. The Nightingales) are a British post-punk/alternative rock band, formed in 1979 in Birmingham, England, by four members of Birmingham's punk group The Prefects. They had been part of The Clash's 'White Riot Tour', recorded a couple of Peel Sessions, released a 45 on Rough Trade and, years after splitting up, had a retrospective CD released by US indie label Acute Records. ////// Described in John Robb's book on 'post punk' Death To Trad Rock as "The misfits' misfits" and comprising an ever-fluctuating line up, based around lyricist/singer Robert Lloyd, the Nightingales enjoyed cult status in the early 1980s as darlings of the credible music scene and were championed by John Peel, who said of them – "Their performances will serve to confirm their excellence when we are far enough distanced from the 1980s to look at the period rationally and other, infinitely better known, bands stand revealed as charlatans". ////// The original members were Robert Lloyd on vocals, Eamonn Duffy on bass and Paul Apperley on drums, all formerly of The Prefects. The band, before splitting up, played more sessions on John Peel's BBC Radio 1 show than any other band excluding The Fall and Half Man Half Biscuit. ////// In the late 1980s, the Nightingales stopped working but, following the occasional gig between times, they re-grouped in 2004, with Lloyd being joined by original Prefects guitarist Alan Apperley. The current line up features Robert Lloyd, James Smith, Andreas Schmid on bass and ex-Violet Violet drummer Fliss Kitson. ////// Since restarting the group have been more productive than ever – releasing five 7" vinyl singles, a 10" EP and six studio albums (plus two live albums), touring England, mainland Europe and US numerous times, recording many radio sessions along the way. They have been invited to play various festivals in Europe and the States, including Glastonbury and SXSW. Their "Let's Think About Living" 45 was 'Single of the Week' on BBC 6 and they have continued to receive regular rave reviews for their records and live shows. ////// A feature-length documentary about the band - King Rocker - fronted by comedian and writer Stewart Lee and directed by Michael Cumming was to be released in 2020, but it eventually debuted on the UK Sky Arts channel on 6 February 2021." Kelley Stoltz  Wings   Favoriting The Sylist  Agitated Records  2022  Stoltz covers the Fall! This version from the "Dinked LP Butterfly effect” blue / pink / purple LP // 2 x bonus 7” (3 exclusive tracks & a Fall cover!) // Hand-numbered Dinked sticker // 450 copies only"" ------------ "“The Stylist”, Kelley Stoltz’s 17th album finds him following up the Third Man Records reissue of his 2001 “Antique Glow”, with a collection of 10 new songs. The album was recorded early in 2021, and has been languishing in the vinyl pressing log jam ever since – but luckily Stoltz writes timeless songs, the kind that might’ve appeared on the fringes of the late 60’s or mid 80’s. Acoustic guitars, synthesizers, drum machines and strong melodies abound. As with his other classic records “Below the Branches”, “Double Exposure” and “Ah! (etc)” Stoltz plays most of the instruments himself and records in his home studio in San Francisco. Kelley says, “I chose the title ‘the Stylist’ because musically I guess that’s what I am… because of the way I write, at my leisure over a period of months at home, I kinda flit around between styles. It’s all in the pop-rock vein, but there’s usually a wide range of sounds and inspiration from song to song. It sort of fits together in a mix tape kind of way, rather than an exploration of one particular mood. That’s always been the case with my albums.” // The chorus-y guitar jangle of “Your Name Escapes Me” somehow name checks the New Bomb Turks, while reflecting on familiar if forgotten faces from Stoltz’s past. On “My Island” insistent piano and saxophone solos take the listener on a tropical trip to the soft rock radio dial. Stoltz played rhythm guitar in Echo & the Bunnymen for a few years, and “We Grew So Far Apart” clangs like a lost Liverpool 80’s classic. Stoltz says, “There’s a touch more piano on this record… going back to my Sub Pop days, when I was writing more Beatle-y bits… Harry Nilsson… that kind of thing.” Indeed, the piano led “It’s a Cold World” plays like a holy union of Todd Rundgren and the Zombies where Stoltz declares, “it’s a cold world at times, but I’m not ready to give up the fight.” // Thankfully, after 23 years the beat goes on… and no matter what style Stoltz chooses, “The Stylist” is another platter of tuneful delight in the impressive catalog of one of the great songwriters of our time."    0:38:20 (Pop-up)
hackedepicciotto  La Femme Sauvage   Favoriting La Femme Sauvage  hackedepicciotto / Mute Artists  2023  Released Jul 19, 2023 -- "hackedepicciotto – Alexander Hacke & Danielle de Picciotto – have shared a new track from their forthcoming album, Keepsakes, that is set for release on vinyl, CD and digitally on July 28th, 2023 via Mute. Listen to the wonderfully woozy “La Femme Sauvage”, a multilingual beauty that unfurls with the spirit of Morricone as sputtering-yet-subtle electronics simmer away in the background, strings swoop and the pair’s vocals stack on top of one another in beautiful harmony. The duo are set to embark on a tour this summer, beginning with dates in Canada starting on July 22nd before they return to Europe for a series of shows and festivals throughout the year. Full dates are listed below. For over 20 years Alexander Hacke (Einstürzende Neubauten) and artist, musician and filmmaker Danielle de Picciotto (co-founder of Love Parade) have been developing and evolving a deeply intuitive and symbiotic working practice and creative partnership. On the new album, Keepsakes, that has manifested into their most intimate release so far. “It might be a clichéd phrase, but this is a very personal album,” says Alexander Hacke. Danielle de Picciotto explains, “We usually sing about universal themes, like the fate of mankind, but this time it's about our personal lives.” Each track on the album is dedicated to a friend, giving the album an immediate and enveloping warmth and allowing each track to possess its own individual personality. While friendship is the central theme, place has been a recurring theme throughout their work and the recording environment plays a significant part to the feel and sound of the album. This time it was the Auditorium Novecento in Napoli that proved key: “…one of the first recording studios in Europe,” says Hacke." --- This project is currently touring, playing our city (from which we broadcast this show to WFMU) of Toronto on Jul 28 at the 918 Bathurst Centre, as presented by the Wavelength Music Series: Wavelength Music Series (Toronto) - Official Website  *   0:44:02 (Pop-up)

Alexander Hacke is founding member and bass player of Einstürzende Neubauten. The artist couple, romantically married in 2006, has creatively interacted with countless international projects for almost 2 decades now besides regularly releasing their own compositions. //// Their live shows are, to put it mildly, intense. Danielle specializes in unusual instruments such as the Hurdy Gurdy, the auto harp and the cemence besides playing the violin and piano; Alexander is master of the bass, guitar and drums. Together they create beautiful, existentialistic, acoustic soundscapes, which roar and vibrate simultaneously leaving their audiences shaken but overjoyed. //// Danielle, author of two books, writes most of their lyrics, be it the poetic spoken word moments or the momentous choirs they compose together. Alexander Hacke, an excellent throat singer and vocalist, growls his grnarly, rumbling cries that float eerily over their nomadic desert drones, with screeching birds, bees or wild wind accompanying slow, heavy riffs that start as a whisper and end in a volcanic, rolling wave of apocalyptic frenzy. The collage of this mixed with melancholic, translucent harmonies, very heavy & low bass chords, and electronics are a mesmerizing universe of sound and emotion which has generated an ever growing group of enthusiastic listeners." --- This project is currently touring, playing our city (from which we broadcast this show to WFMU) of Toronto on Jul 28 at the 918 Bathurst Centre, as presented by the Wavelength Music Series: Wavelength Music Series (Toronto) - Official Website

Teen Mortgage  Oligarghy   Favoriting Oligarchy Single  King Pizza Records  2023  Washington DC duo Teen Mortgage have become renowned for their fast and furious, in-your-face approach, producing music bursting with fuzzy Garage-Rock riffs and no nonsense vocal attacks. They claim to have "bulldozed their way to a regional reputation after assaulting the publics' ears" and that's not a bad description for how direct and uncompromising their music is. On their latest single 'Oligarchy', they've taken a slight sonic shift while maintaining all the energy and angst that has earned them support slots alongside Ron Gallo, Surf Curse, The Chats, Bass Drum of Death and more!  *   0:58:57 (Pop-up)

On every release Powerplant mutates, changes and rotates their sound and on this EP it’s no different. The rigid march of drum machines is now more determined and powerful than ever. Grass serves as their fatalist manifesto against burning daylight spending time fruitlessly. Like an intrusive thought or a ghost, the theme of time passing, barges into every song, calling to action. Powerplant, like a converted believer, is here to guide you through. “It gets worse before it gets worse”, says bandleader Theo Zhykharyev, “I waited forever for things to get better and a perfect time to put out these songs, but judging from the trajectory of events - this is as good as it’s going to get.”  *   1:00:56 (Pop-up)

The single reached No. 11 on the UK Singles Chart and in New Zealand. Bassist Mick Quinn said in regard to the recording of the song: "There were certain instances where Danny didn't hit the snare [drum] loud enough so we all had to clap over the snare. In the end it sounds like [David] Bowie." Drummer Danny Goffey explained the history behind the song: "It came about when we were just in our rehearsal studio and we all started singing it over three chords. It's quite easy to play. The easier the song is to play, the better we play it. It just happened really quickly. It was one of those songs that just comes together in 10 minutes." Though the title of the song is "Pumping on Your Stereo," the band thought it funny to actually sing the word "humping" in place of "pumping," and this is how it is thus heard on the recording.    1:47:34 (Pop-up)
Jona Lewie  Vous Et Moi   Favoriting You Will Always Find Me In The Kitchen At Parties 7"  Stiff Canada  1980  The B side to his biggest hit, this is a charming little tune very reminiscent of Eno with a bit of Brian Ferry thrown in...though never perhaps a superstar...and definitely a one and half hit wonder...he has consistently worked and played over a 50 year career, most recently touring with Captain sensible in 2009.    1:50:54 (Pop-up)
The Style Council  Long Hot Summer   Favoriting Long Hot Summer 7"  Polydor  1983  "Long Hot Summer" is a song by the English band The Style Council which was their third single to be released. It was composed by lead singer Paul Weller, recorded between 12 and 17 June 1983 in the Grande Armée Studios in Paris, and released on 8 August 1983. The song reached the position of number three in the UK singles chart making it the Style Council's biggest hit, and it remains a staple of Paul Weller's live concerts. By coincidence the British summer heat wave of 1983, most notably July, turned out to be one of the hottest on record – something that would not have been known at the time the song was written and recorded...    1:53:04 (Pop-up)

Dionne Warwick  This Girl's In Love With You   Favoriting This Girl's In Love With You 7"  Pop Classics  1975  "This Guy's in Love with You" is a song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, and recorded by Herb Alpert. Although known primarily for his trumpet playing as the leader of the Tijuana Brass, Alpert sang lead vocals on this solo recording, arranged by Bacharach. Dionne's version version of the song, as "This Girl's in Love With You" was released as a single in 1969, reaching No. 7 in the U.S. that same year. It also spent four weeks at No. 2 on the Easy Listening chart.    1:58:32 (Pop-up)

yeah. getting decent doctors who actually properly diagnosed me as opposed to the near death sentence i originally had, really helped ( i had no health insurance when everything went down). You've got to understand, there's a multitude of reasons and advantages to "taking in the WFMU experience" audibly. and one of the biggest reasons by far is the nostalgia angle. it's near impossible for any music to turn me off. If i don't like it at first, then I want to investigate, why. b/c in my experience, there has been many genres/artists i didn't like at first, but on investigation of their story, sonic connections, and/or cultural intermeshing, it then makes sense to me (even if i dislike the artist as a person).
