For most of evolutionary history, sweetness was a pretty good indicator of being full of not only calories but also many vintamins and necessary nutrients (i.e., ripe fruit). Only in relatively recent history poeople have figured out how to game our evolutionarily adpative craving for sugar to get the sugar without all the nutrients that come with it in nature. Obviusly natural selection hasn't had time to weed out the craving for sugar...yet.
