Pixies | Trompe La Monde | Trompe La Monde | 4AD | 1993 | Trompe le Monde is the fourth studio album by the American alternative rock band Pixies, released on September 23, 1991 on 4AD in the United Kingdom and on September 24, 1991, on Elektra Records in the United States. Recorded in Burbank, California, Paris and London, the album was produced by Gil Norton, and was Pixies' final studio album before their subsequent break-up two years later. Trompe le Monde is the last album to feature founding bass guitarist Kim Deal. Michael Bonner of Lime Lizard described Trompe le Monde as "one of the best albums that you may very well ever hear" and "a strong contender for best album of the 20th century". In a retrospective review, AllMusic writer Heather Phares noted the reduced role of Kim Deal, calling it "essentially Black Francis' solo debut".
Flat Worms | Time Warp In Exile | Witness Marks | Drag City GOD? | 2023 | Angular L.A. punks Flat Worms -- guitarist Will Ivy, drummer Justin Sullivan (Kevin Morby) and bassist Tim Hellman (OSEES) -- have announced new album Witness Marks, which will be out September 22 via Ty Segall's Drag City GOD? imprint. This is their first album since 2020's Steve Albini-recorded Antarctica, and this new one had them working with Segall at his Harmonizer studio. The first single from the album is snarling ripper "Time Warp in Exile" about which Will Ivy says, "Given the opportunity to live in harmony, human nature takes over to corrupt. Jealousy and greed cannot be tamed; the relatable fate of Cain and Abel." Click here to watch the video: Flat Worms - Time Warp in Exile (Official Music Video) | * |

77 Million Paintings |
UMC / Opal |
2023 |
Seemingly the latest iteration of a project dating back to the project Brian Eno started in 2006, which was a originally a digital art software/DVD combination. Streaming services have offered up a 2023 version of "77 Million Paintings" that features 6 distinct pieces. Originally, though, the concept was much different. ////// First Edition: Far from containing 77 million paintings, the software consists of 296 original works which are overlaid and combined up to four at a time in a simulation of simultaneous projection onto a common screen. The various images are slowly faded in and out asynchronously before being replaced by another random element. Also, the music that accompanies the paintings, if played on a Mac G5 or a Windows PC, is randomly generated in a similar way, so the selection of elements and their duration in the piece are arbitrarily chosen, forming a virtually infinite number of variations. In conjunction with this, Annabeth Robinson (AngryBeth Shortbread) recreated the performance in Second Life by building the performance in a multi-user virtual environment (MUVE). ////// Second Edition: A second edition of "77 Million Paintings", featuring improved morphing and a further two layers of sound, was released on 14 January 2008. ////// Project evolution: 77 Million Paintings has evolved beyond the domestic environment. It continues to be shown in multiple-monitor configurations in art galleries and is projected onto iconic buildings around the world. In 2009, Eno was invited to project 77 Million Paintings onto the sails of the Sydney Opera House." |

Diode | Ugly | Diode | Refry Records | 2021 | We've now featured over half of this amazing synth punk record by Australian supergroup DIODE. It features members of Freakees, Shark Toys, Rearranged Face, Wild Wing, Vaguess, Fernando and the Teenage Narcs, etc. IT FUCKING SLAPS.
Odonis Odonis (feat. Patriarchy) | Scapegoat | ICON (EP) | Felte | 2023 | "Audacious would be an understatement to describe goth-rock/industrial outfit Patriarchy, who take the phrase “fuck the patriarchy” to another level. The trio, fronted by multi-instrumentalist, filmmaker, and all-around provocateur Actually Huizenga, is as much about the music as they are about the performance art aspect. On their latest release, “Scapegoat,” they feature alongside Toronto electronic duo Odonis Odonis and do everything but shy away from their vampiric brand of techno. For all intents and purposes, “Scapegoat” is a scapegoat to show off Huizenga’s steadfast approach to music. Though the skeletal synthesizers and eerie drones certainly add to the atmosphere, Huizenga takes center stage thanks to deep, throaty vocals and hellish groans in the latter half. And that’s without having to mention the moans that come in and out of the track, vocal inflictions fitting for the many uncensored Patriarchy music videos only available on Vimeo rather than YouTube." | * |
Yello | I Love You | I Love You 12" | Elektra | 1983 | "I Love You" is a 1983 song by Swiss band Yello from their album You Gotta Say Yes to Another Excess. The song reached number 41 in the United Kingdom and number 16 on the Billboard Dance Club songs chart. The song was also accompanied by a music video which was directed by Dieter Meier. AllMusic's John Bush stated the song has "deep-throated vocals"
Blonde Redhead | Melody Experiment | Sit Down For Dinner | Section 1 | 2023 | Full album releases Sep 29. "Last month, Blonde Redhead announced their first new album in 8 years, Sit Down For Dinner, which will be released at the end of September. At the time, they shared lead single “Snowman“; [more recently], they’re back with the dreamy “Melody Experiment.” “This song is a conversational piece between two people,” Kazu Makino explained in a statement. “One is questioning the intentions, integrity, and consequences of one’s emotions and actions. She is hypersensitive. The other keeps things simple, allowing himself to go with the flow. Musically, I was able to find something that is quite true and natural to myself, and now I want to continue on this path.”"
Pixx | Andean Condor | Small Mercies | 4AD | 2019 | Under the guise of Pixx, 23 year-old British artist Hannah Rodgers makes an unpredictable and slyly political mix of electronic pop and grunge-rock. Andean Condor takes aim at the patriarchy through the lens of the world’s largest flying bird. “This song is written about the link between wo/mankind and nature...It is important to recognize how many times women have to face the absurdity of male hierarchy in our modern world. Having had endless conversations with (certain) men who justify the inequality of the sexes by comparing themselves to animals, I thought what better way to help them than to remind those men that they are supposed to be human, with emotional capability and growth.”

Joe Strummer | Jewellers & Bums | Gangsterville EP | Epic | 1989 | "Released in 1989, Earthquake Weather was Joe Strummer’s highest charting solo album and his first-ever album under his own name following the break-up of The Clash. Recorded in Los Angeles, his backing band for the album, christened the Latino Rockabilly War by Strummer, featured Zander Schloss from Circle Jerks and drummer Jack Irons from Red Hot Chili Peppers & Pearl Jam. The album features the singles ‘Gangsterville’ and ‘Island Hopping’."
The Equals | Police On My Back | Police On My Back - Single | President Records | 1968 | Originally released on the Baby, Come Back album in 1968, the song enjoyed a revival in the manner of Junior Murvin's "Police And Thieves" when UK punk band The Clash recorded a cover of the song in 1980 for their Sandinista! album. "We used to play the Equals' version on the tour bus, Mick was the first one to play it to me" said bassist Paul Simonon. "We recorded it at the Power Station, just the three of us, me, Mick (Jones, guitarist) and Topper (Headon, drummer). Paul put his bit on later in Wessex," noted singer Joe Strummer. There was a slight problem with recording in New York as no record store in NYC had a copy of the album, so Clash aide Kosmo Vinyl had to bring a copy of the LP over from London to help the band remember the lyrics. This song was cited by some critics in reviews of the Sandinista! album as the most Clash-sounding song on the album - with the irony being that it's a cover! The song was a live standard for the band from 1981 until their breakup.
The Cougars | I Wish It Would Rain | Jamaica To Toronto: Soul Funk & Reggae 67-74 | Light in the Attic Records | 1970 / 2006 | "aking musical cues from The Band and Count Ossie, this previously unreleased 45 version of The Temptations "I Wish It Would Rain" is the personification of the Jamaica To Toronto sound, combining the Yonge Street strip's gutbucket R&B with the Nyabinghi-feel of the Rastafarians. "Right On" captures The Cougars in trance-inducing funk mode, like early Kool & The Gang, replete with a power to the people chant. Less than a half-dozen originals were ever pressed of this two sider monster." Clive Barry (aka Jay Douglas): vocals / Jackie Richardson: vocals / Everton Paul: drums, percussion / Newton "Dizzy" Barker: organ / Gary Gabriel: guitar / Terry Lewis: bass / Wayne Jackson: trumpet / Trevor Dailey: trombone
The Undertones | Teenage Kicks | The Undertones | BMG | 1977 | "Teenage Kicks" is the debut single by Northern Irish punk rock band the Undertones. Written in the summer of 1977 by J.J. O'Neill, the band's rhythm guitarist and principal songwriter, the song was recorded on 15 June 1978 and initially released that September on independent Belfast record label Good Vibrations, before the band signed to Sire Records on 2 October 1978. John Peel is known to have repeatedly stated "Teenage Kicks" to be his all-time favourite song from 1978 until his death in 2004. When he first played the song on his show on 25 September, he played the song twice (something he had never previously done). Peel also specifically requested sections of the lyrics of the song be engraved upon his tombstone.

"Wichita Lineman" is a song written by the American songwriter Jimmy Webb in 1968. It was first recorded by the American country music artist Glen Campbell with backing from members of The Wrecking Crew and has since been widely covered by other artists. It has been referred to as "the first existential country song". |

The Fall | Whizz Bang (BBC John Peel Session) | Extricate (Expanded version: Disc Two) | Universal/Fontana | 1990 / 2007 | "Recorded [Dec 1989] for a [Jan 1990] John Peel Session but never broadcast on MES's insistence. It later emerged, considerably reworked and with different lyrics, on the B side of Popcorn Double Feature as 'Butterflies 4 Brains.' The Peel version only surfaced when the box set was released in 2005" --- For all its rarity, this is a version that I can barely tolerate, due to the daft, frivolous chorus. The band would later re-write / re-arrange this chorus into a far more chaotic/sinister snarl on the official version of the song. Needless to say, I find that version far more pleasing. More quotes for Fall Fan Sites: " "Whizz bang" (or "whiz bang") was a nickname among Allied troops in WWI for high-powered German ordnance. The Germans' 77mm field guns fired shells at a velocity greater than the speed of sound; the soldiers would hear the shell "whizz" by before the heard the gun fire, hence the name. In World War II, the US developed a Sherman tank with a rocket launcher called the T40 Whizbang."
The Stranglers | Hanging Around | The Stranglers - John Peel Session | Stigma | 1985 | Peel first went to see The Stranglers at the Hammersmith Odeon in October 1976 supporting Patti Smith, well before the band were signed to United Artists Records and subsequently became a champion of their music in their early stage. The band recorded two sessions for his show, the first of which was broadcast before their debut album "Rattus Norvegicus" came out and later repeated several times. During one of these repeats on 12 May 1977, Peel enthusiastically referred to them as one of the bands who were making "the first half of 1977 the best six months for music since the latter half of 1967" and added that the more he heard them, the more he liked them. 40 years later, in 2017, bassist J.J. Burnel recalled that the BBC sessions and Peel's support signaled the moment when the band started to gain credibility and legitimacy in the scene
The Fall | Butterflies 4 Brains | Extricate (Expanded version: Disc Two) | Universal/Fontana | 1990 / 2007 | Originally the B-side of the 1990 single "Popcorn Double Feature", this is the version I prefer, with its darker, more sinister, lurching, sickly psychedelic details. ""The Four of Us Are Dying" is the title of a Twilight Zone episode, which was also an inspiration for "What You Need."" Group on initial recording: Mark E Smith – vocals; Craig Scanlon – guitar; Martin Bramah – guitar; Steve Hanley – bass; Marcia Schofield – keyboards; Simon Wolstencroft - drums (+ Cassell Webb - backing vocals) // "Commentary: It has been claimed that Martin Bramah's song "Dream Boat", released with The Blue Orchards on the album The Sleeper in 2003 (though recorded 10 years earlier) is reminiscent of The Fall's track. The lyrics in live performances differ very little from the studio version, on which Cassell Webb sings backing vocals."
Echo and The Bunnymen | Read It In Books (John Peel Session) | The John Peel Sessions 1979-1983 | BBC | 2019 | Peel saw the Bunnymen supporting The Fall at the Factory club in Manchester on 20th July 1979 and helped to bring the group to a wider audience. According to guitarist Will Sergeant: "He was enormously influential in bringing the Bunnymen to the public. You can't imagine us getting anywhere without having done the early Peel sessions. We treated them as demos too, they were dead important for us in discovering and recording our sound. But he was more than that. He was important as a fan, because everyone listened to him." They remained a favourite of Peel, recording seven sessions for Peel and also performed at a special gig for his 60th birthday.

Blue Orchids | Dream Boat | The Sleeper | LTM Recordings | 1993 | Definitely either the template for Butterflies 4 Brains by The Fall, or reworked by Martin Bramah again after he left The Fall. Either way, it is pretty much the same song in yet another guise. "Recorded in 1993, The Sleeper confirms Martin Bramah as a major (if sorely underrated) songwriting talent."
Inspiral Carpets | Saturn 5 | Devil Hopping | Mute | 1994 | Devil Hopping is the fourth studio album from British indie band Inspiral Carpets, released on 7 March 1994 via Mute Records. Saturn V is a retired American super heavy-lift launch vehicle developed by NASA under the Apollo program for human exploration of the Moon. The rocket was human-rated, had three stages, and was powered with liquid fuel. It was flown from 1967 to 1973. It was used for nine crewed flights to the Moon, and to launch Skylab, the first American space station.
Blur | St. Charles Square | The Ballad Of Darren | Parlophone Records Ltd | 2023 | In May Blur announced their first new album in eight years, "The Ballad Of Darren", and introduced it with lead single “The Narcissist.” Not long after, they played some warm-up shows where they did live rarities and debuted a couple of new songs. One of those songs was “St. Charles Square,” which they released as the album’s official second single, as of June 29. "In an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music 1, Damon Albarn talked a bit about the song: “I was just really relieved it went this way in the studio. I mean, in my demo it sort of alluded to it because of the chords that hold in the chorus — it’s got that chug to it — but Graham [Coxon] really went with it … It’s got an amazing atmosphere. Everybody’s playing really well on that thing.” “Do you know what the whole thing has really felt like?” Albarn continued. “We’re sort of somewhere in 1992, something like that, ’92, ’93. We’re just sort of back. I don’t know. And when we go on stage, that’s we’re where we start off … I’ve always kind of felt like it’s not just about singing about yourself. You’ve got to kind of bring where you’re singing it and writing it with you.”" | * |
Dandy Warhols | Boys Better | Dandy Warhols Come Down | Capitol Records | 1997 | The Dandy Warhols are an American alternative rock band, formed in Portland, Oregon, in 1994 by singer-guitarist Courtney Taylor-Taylor and guitarist Peter Holmström. They were later joined by keyboardist Zia McCabe and drummer Eric Hedford. Hedford left in 1998 and was replaced by Taylor-Taylor's cousin Brent DeBoer. The band's name is a play on the name of American pop artist Andy Warhol.

Pan Ron & Korn Phnao | Pnhaeu Samnieng | Cambodian Soul Sounds, Vol. 1 | Cambodian Soul Sounds | 2014 | Pen Ran, commonly known as Pan Ron in some Romanized sources intended for English-speaking audiences, was a Cambodian singer and songwriter who was at the height of her popularity in the 1960s and early 1970s. Known particularly for her western rock and soul influences, flirtatious dancing, and risque lyrics, Pen Ran has been described by the New York Times as a "worldly, wise-cracking foil" to the more restrained Cambodian pop singers of her era. She disappeared during the Khmer Rouge genocide and her fate is unknown. This song seems to borrow heavily from a Beatles tune and that...is great.
