The Fall | Hot Runes | The Unutterable (Special Deluxe Edition) | Eagle | 2000 / 2008 | A Fall song about a hot June afternoon. There really is a Fall song for every occasion! Happy summer for those of you who have it. Happy Summer hot June afternoon to our west coast/western pals. Hope this song is fitting for you! "The Unutterable is notable for not featuring a cover song in any format, unlike all of the group's other studio albums from Bend Sinister forward; although "Ketamine Sun" reportedly started life as a cover of Lou Reed's "Kill Your Sons", there is little musical similarity between the two tracks. //// This was the first and only Fall 'official' studio release to be issued on CD only, without a corresponding vinyl version. A double-LP set was eventually issued through Let Them Eat Vinyl in 2014 with the same track listing." | 0:01:06 (Pop-up)
The Fall | Hot Rune | The Unutterable (Special Deluxe Edition) - Testa Rossa monitor mixes disc | Eagle | 2000 / 2008 | The Fall rabbit hole is large. 8 years after the album is released, out comes a deluxe version with monitor mixes. They are sometimes very close to the originals. Or, in this case, completely different, with then Smith-partner Julia Nagle taking the lead vocals. An entirely different set of vocals. Sparks | The Mona Lisa's Packing, Leaving Late Tonight | The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte | Island | 2023 | The Brothers Mael are back with a new album, fully released. Their 26th album strikes the ideal Sparksian balance of madcap melody, labyrinthine arrangement, and stinging social satire. The album marks the Maels’ return to Island (incubator of their earliest ’70s hits) after 47 years, but the move doesn’t so much signal a return to their glam glory days as reaffirm Sparks’ surging currency. Through Sparks’ looking glass, history becomes fantasy, politics become pantomime, and dictators become DJs...on “The Mona Lisa’s Packing, Leaving Late Tonight,” even da Vinci’s eternal model of calm contentment is anxious to step out of the frame and run for the hills. “She might seem dispassionate, but that’s not true/She feels much the same as everyone, me and you,” Russell observes as he rides a synth-speckled stomp into an alternate universe where Sparks enlisted Giorgio Moroder to produce Indiscreet. | 0:10:03 (Pop-up)
Belle and Sebastian | Legal Man | Legal Man EP | Jeepster | 2003 | A divisive single among hardcore fans of the Scottish band Belle and Sebastian, this poppy little ditty may lack the substance of some of their other music, but it's a great little ye-ye inspired romp that's perfect for an early summer evening! | 0:13:37 (Pop-up)
Yamasuki | Anata Bakama | Le Monde Fabuleux Des Yamasuki | Biram | 1971 | Yamasuki began as a dance craze in 5 steps — full-body instructions are on the album cover. Its mastermind was Daniel Vangarde, a French auteur of the concept album who skipped and pirouetted across genres and cultures with Gainsbourgian whimsy. Written mostly with his Belgian producer-partner Jean Kluger, Le Monde Fabuleux Des Yamasuki features a mesmerizing, detailed aesthetic concept: a children’s chorus singing fast-paced melodies, mostly in Japanese, tracked over heavy bass and coolly fatbacked drumming. The songs are short and tight, and the album flies by like a shamelessly fun, intricately planned costume party. | 0:16:19 (Pop-up)
Sinn Sisamouth | Voy Ho (Maok Pi Naok) | Cambodian Rocks | CC | 1974 | While performing with the Cambodian national radio station, Sisamouth became a protege of Queen Sisowath Kossamak, mother of Head of State Norodom Sihanouk. The Queen invited Sisamouth to join the Vong Phleng Preah Reach Troap (the classical ensemble of the Royal Treasury) with which he performed at royal receptions and state functions. He also achieved hit songs on national radio around this time, first writing and performing songs based on traditional Khmer music. In the mid-1950s, the romantic ballad "Violon Sneha", composed by violinist Hass Salan, catapulted Sisamouth into stardom across Cambodia. Sisamouth became known for his crooning voice, which has been likened to that of Nat King Cole, while his stage presence has been compared to that of Frank Sinatra.[ | 0:19:22 (Pop-up)
The Psychedelic Aliens | We're Laughing | Psycho African Beat | Academy LPs | 2010 | For a few years in the late '60s to early '70s worlds collided and aliens walked among us. Psycho African Beat is the complete recorded output of this amazing group and their unprecedented music that combined elements of American soul , funk, garage rock and psych with African rhythms and melodies -- and made music. This magical moment lasted for three short years producing only three releases: One four-song EP and two 7"s. Today, these three original releases are the most sought after and most elusive African funk records. It took Frank Gossner (Voodoofunk.com, Soulpusher, DJ Franco) four years, nine visits to Ghana , and dozens of newspaper ads and radio announcements to track them down. | 0:21:14 (Pop-up)

Janko Nilović (born 20 May 1941) is a pianist, arranger and composer of Montenegrin and Greek descent who was born in Turkey and has lived in France since 1960. He has published many works, most of them on library labels not available for sale to the public. His oeuvre stretches from classical, jazz, and funk to pop, psychedelia, and easy listening. His reputation and influence grew, and his music began to be sampled by hip-hop and other musicians. The producer Dr. Dre sampled much of Nilović's piece "Underground Session" for his track "Loose Cannons" from the album Compton. |

Luge | Skin So Green | Luge | Self-Released (Bandcamp) | 2020 | From Toronto, the excellent Luge have just announced (today) a forthcoming album in September! Hurrah! In the meantime, this is a green song from an old one "Try to categorize Luge and start again. Are they noise funk? Avant-prog? Math punk? Synthesize those influences in a vacuum-sealed container, shake it up, let fly the cap and watch the carbonated substance erupt across the room with hyper erratic gusto, and you'll be closer to understanding what the Toronto four-piece has going on. Luge are all highly technical, densely tangled elastic arrangements littered with noodling guitars, slap bass, stop-and-start dynamics and frequent left turns into dissonant splatter-punk noise." Night Beats | Thorns | Outlaw R&B | Fuzz Club | 2021 | Outlaw R&B Review by Mark Deming: "Cleaning up your act doesn't always have to be a forever thing. In 2019, after the latest edition of his band Night Beats unexpectedly fell apart, Danny Lee Blackwell decided to try something different -- he went into the studio with Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys serving as producer and a band of veteran Nashville session cats backing him up. The result was the album Myth of a Man, which buffed most of the rough edges off his sound, and eased back on his blues, psychedelic, and garage rock influences and favored a more mature and contemplative, country-influenced tone. Myth of a Man was by no means a bad or uninspired album, but if anyone wondered if Blackwell's heart was really in it, 2021's Outlaw R&B suggests that he's learned whatever lessons he wanted from the experience and has tossed the rest aside. Outlaw R&B is a more disciplined and tightly focused set than 2013's Sonic Bloom or 2016's Who Sold My Generation, but if Blackwell is better at coloring within the lines on these sessions, he's brought back a lot of the colors he left off his palette on his previous LP. The production on Outlaw R&B has just the right amount of grain around the edges of the sound, and Blackwell's guitar work has much of its edge back. The songs also load up on the unfiltered blues and psychedelic influences he tamped down on Myth of a Man -- this is a bit less garage-centric than Night Beats' earliest work, but this party is wild enough to qualify as a return to form, and the swampy, mildly sinister undertow on tracks like "Shadow," "Crypt," and "Never Look Back" attest to the notion that evil and fun are not mutually exclusive. And while "Hell in Texas" reveals Blackwell hasn't given up on his country inclinations, he's filled it with enough gothic gingerbread to make it seem suitably eccentric. Outlaw R&B suggests Danny Lee Blackwell hasn't completely turned his back on the Myth of a Man experiment, but he knows the right amount of dirt can give music some valuable texture, and this music is all the more enjoyable for its increase in grit." | 0:40:37 (Pop-up)

Odonis Odonis | Passing Us By (ft. SUUNS) | ICONS | Pirates Blend / Felte | 2023 | "Odonis Odonis have proven time and time again that they’re not interested in doing the same thing twice. Since their beginnings, the Toronto outfit led by core duo Constantin Tzenos and Denholm Whale, have put out five full-length albums, and played countless shows and festivals across North America and Europe, all while following their musical instincts. In the past eleven years, they’ve thrillingly explored genres including post-punk, EBM, industrial, shoegaze, pop, and surf rock. For their next evolution, Odonis Odonis are shifting from the grind of the traditional music industry with its unsustainable physical and psychological demands, to strictly focus on meaningful creative endeavors. These include releasing music, album production, and event production, and draw on Tzenos and Whale’s collective talents and experience. From producing, scoring, and mastering at Tzenos’s new studio After Hours, to countless curated shows through Whale’s co-run concert company Transmit Presents, these past and forthcoming projects were chosen selectively, and with the intention of working with individuals they respect and admire. //// Out June 9th on Pirates Blend (Canada) & Felte, the duo describe their forthcoming collaborative EP ICON as a “calling card,” and it perfectly encapsulates the new iteration of Odonis Odonis. Following their 2021 album Spectrums, they started working on this collection of five songs, writing them geared towards some of their favorite veteran and up-and coming artists. “We wanted to bring out what we admire in them and prove that we can do a variety of styles,” explains Whale. Some like New York noise rock mainstays A Place to Bury Strangers, Pittsburgh experimentalist TOBACCO, and Vancouver post-punks ACTORS, they’ve previously shared stages and tour vans with, while others like Vancouver darkwave singer and pianist Terror Bird and Los Angeles industrial pop project Patriarchy, are more recent discoveries. The striking artwork comes courtesy of New York-based noise artist Dreamcrusher, another act who shares Whale and Tzenos’ community-minded ethos. Somewhat ironically, by shedding their skin as a band, the duo have embraced the individual spotlight more, and ICON marks the first chapter (with further collaborations to come) of this new Odonis Odonis era. - Max Mertens" Odonis Odonis (Bandcamp) | * | 0:50:56 (Pop-up) |
Water From Your Eyes | Buy My Product | Everyone's Crushed | Matador Records | 2023 | From their new album, and first for Matador, released May 26. The first pressing only of the album comes with a bonus seven-inch single containing two tracks that are not available on vinyl anywhere else. Mind Maze is, amazingly, Trees Speak’s fifth album to be released on Soul Jazz Records in the space of little over two years – an output matched only by the intensity of their music created during this short time. As with all their previous releases, ‘Mind Maze’ is a mind-boggling tightrope walk across an array of musical influences that seamlessly create the unique present-day world of Trees Speak. The band’s sound is characterized by a combination of German krautrock motoric-beat rhythms, angular New York post-punk attitude, 60s spy soundtracks, psych, rock, jazz, and 70s synthesizers and vocoders. There is also a cosmic spatial awareness to their sound; both personal inner space and galactic outer space, as well as a wilful pushing of sonic boundaries. Trees Speak are a musical duo based in Tucson, Arizona, composed of Daniel Martin Diaz and Damian Diaz. If you don't know him by his real name, you might know him under the nickname: "The Giant". Whether you're aware of it or not you've certainly heard his music, leaving behind him over 1,500 songs, some of which have made history. Bernard Estardy started by playing in Parisian jazz clubs as a young pianist backing great acts such as Bill Coleman or Nancy Sinatra. After becoming an expert on the keys, his next adventure was playing the organ for Nino Ferrer and creating the riffs which are known today as classics. You've guessed it, behind the songs "Mirza" or "Les Cornichons"; it's Bernard. Nino Ferrer being like a volcano, always on the edge about to blow, Estardy co-founded the CBE Studio in 1969 -- one of Paris's legendary studios. There, the most popular songs and albums of the French repertoire were recorded from François Hardy's "Comment Te Dire Adieu" to Manset's "La Mort d'Orion", even Bert Jansch or Lee Hazlewood visited the studio. CBE has been the home of many great acts from Johnny Hallyday to Serge Gainsbourg, and one way or the another, the very man behind the mixing desk is responsible for more than 400 million record sales all over the world. De Roubaix was a French film score composer. In a decade, he created a musical style with new sounds, until his death in 1975. Roubaix did not receive any formal education in music, but began studying jazz on his own at age 15, forming a band and learning trombone as an autodidact. His father, the Oscar-winning filmmaker Paul de Roubaix who was a producer of the short film, "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" and the creator of educational films, offered to let François compose scores for the latter. François' first film score was for a 1961 film by Robert Enrico; through the late 1960s and early 1970s he scored films for Enrico, Jose Giovanni, Jean-Pierre Melville, Jean-Pierre Mocky, and Yves Boisset. Notable in his style is his use of folk elements, as well as electronic musical instruments such as synthesizers and early drum machines. He is thus seen as a precursor of French electronic music. |

The Wedding Present | Summer | 24 Songs | Scopitones | 2022 / 2023 | "Throughout 2022, The Wedding Present’s ‘24 Songs’ series saw the legendary indie band release two new tracks a month as double A sided 7”s, ultimately creating a much-sought-after box set. David Gedge has now re-curated full-length versions of all twenty-four tracks for a new compilation album that will also comprise five bonus recordings including one featuring The Wedding Present’s first guitarist, Peter Solowka. //// ‘24 Songs’ was a doff of the cap to The Wedding Present’s ‘Hit Parade’ project of 30 years previous. That series proved to be a real milestone for the band with them becoming only the second-ever artist to achieve twelve Official UK Top 40 hits in a calendar year – at the time something that only Elvis had achieved! //// David Gedge says: “When it came to compiling the ‘24 Songs’ album, I decided not to sequence the tracks in chronological order. With six sides of vinyl, you have six ‘beginnings’ and six ‘ends’ to play with, and I felt that the opportunity to build some kind of a musical journey was too good to miss! Listening back to this collection, I have to say that I genuinely believe that, for this project, The Wedding Present have recorded some of the best tracks in our history. I loved releasing the singles, but it’s satisfying to have them all rounded up together.”" | * | 1:30:21 (Pop-up) |
Tough Age | In A Garden | Waiting Here | We Are Time | 2023 | "By Francis Baptiste / Published Jun 15, 2023... "The latest album from indie pop mainstays Tough Age celebrates 10 years of the band's upbeat, straightforward brand of pop rock. Known for their peppy tempos and unfussy guitar riffs, Tough Age deliver more of what their fanbase craves: a reason to get out of your seat and jump around to some joyous, raucous rock songs. /// Waiting Here sees the band return to the west coast. After spending years in Toronto, the trio touches back down in Vancouver, reuniting with some past members in the process. This hometown return seems to have sparked a new vigor in the veteran group. The 10 songs on Waiting Here sound just as lively and bombastic as the songs on Tough Age's self-titled debut, which came out a decade prior. //// Original bassist Lauren Smith has rejoined the band, after spending some years in much-adored Vancouver DIY bands like WUT and Jock Tears. Her presence seems to have energized the band, and she sings the main vocal on the track "Paradise by Another Name" and provides backing vocals on "Time & Again." //// The album was recorded live to tape and performed as a three-piece, which included Jarrett Evan Samson on guitar and vocals, Jess Locke on drums, and Smith on bassist and vocals. It's nice to hear something that's a little more raw and true to form, which feels increasingly rare with the advances in recording technology and affordability. It's comforting to hear a record that isn't fully quantized to metronomic precision and auto-tuned to a flawless polish. //// The band continues to refine their particular approach to pop on Waiting Here. The beats and the riffs might sound like familiar territory, but lyrically and musically they continue to grow at their own pace, trying to perfect their own brand of rock. There will always be a place in the world for a solid three-chord rock song, and Tough Age have been contributing to that legacy for over a decade now. "Mr. Elevator – formed in Southern California in 2012 by Tomas Dolas and Justin Martinez (and their mutual love of Donovan) – eschews guitars for vintage synthesizers, organs, and electric pianos, distinguishing themselves within the fuzzy, distorted contemporary Psych-Pop scene. Under the original name Mr. Elevator and the Brain Hotel, the band began playing shows as a three-piece with bassist Wyatt Blair, and a short while later, in 2013, relocated to Los Angeles where they released their first album, Nico & her Psychedelic Subconscious, with Burger Records. After a few years of live shows, perfecting their sound alongside acts like Thee Oh Sees, The Fresh & Onlys, The Black Lips, Allah-Las, and more, Mr. Elevator released their second album, When the Morning Greets You, in early 2017. "The drum clock is docking and the night tide washes up synthesized environments woozy and recorded perfectly,” kicks off John Dwyer’s magniloquent description of his friend and Oh Sees bandmate Dolas’ 2020 record as Mr. Elevator, Goodbye, Blue Sky. While When the Morning Greets You was drenched in as much lustrous sun as the album title implies, Goodbye, Blue Sky truly does bid adieu to the brightness of day to welcome twilight and the mysteries of the night with open arms." Pipe-Eye | Trust Fund Baby | Laugh About Life | Flightless | 2017 | Nicholas Roderick "Cook" Craig is an Australian musician, singer and songwriter and is a part of groups King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard and the Murlocs. Craig releases music under the name Pipe-Eye. His leanings as a multi instrumentalist are perhaps a little more dreamy and even more surreal than what KGATLW offer...and we like it! | 1:49:14 (Pop-up)
Klaus Nomi | Za Bakdaz - Live | Za Bakdaz: The Unfinished Opera | Heliocentric | 2008 | Klaus Nomi was one of the greatest, if not underrated voices of the last century. Instead of treading the boards of major opera houses as an operatic countertenor...which by all means he could have done with ease...he instead decided to make art rock and synth music in the seedy clubs of New York and Berlin. Za Bakdaz: The Unfinished Opera is a collection of songs German countertenor Klaus Nomi was working on up until his death in 1983. The album was released posthumously in 2007. The large majority of the tracks have never before been heard on an official studio release; the original sessions took place from 1979 to 1983, with the tracks completed between 1984 and 2006 at the home studio of Page Wood and George Elliott. Some of those involved with the project have said that the album was nowhere near completed at the time of Klaus' passing. What remains is still a glimpse of his genius and talent. | 1:52:20 (Pop-up)

Holy Wave, Estrella Del Sol | Happier | Happier Single | Suicide Squeeze Records | 2023 | Austin shoegazers Holy Wave have announced a new album, Five of Cups, which will be out August 4 via Suicide Squeeze. The title comes from a tarot card reading that stuck with Ryan Fuson at the height of the pandemic. The first single is the album's closing track, "Happier," a drony/dreamy song featuring Mint Field's Estrella del Sol. "We had been working on this song on and off again for a while and it all kind of came together right before we started recording this album," Fuson says. "The song is loosely a song to Kurt Vonnegut, and a song taking some of his ideas and quotes and exploring them a little further. Mainly just a song about happiness today and maybe where it was during his time. While recording this song we knew that we wanted something unique for the outro, but we didn’t really know what it was that we were looking for, so we sent the song to Estrella and basically asked her to do whatever she thought was right and she completely exceeded our vision. It really took the song to a whole new level, some place we have never been before." | 1:57:35 (Pop-up) |
