i think it's because 3 dog night's "captured live at the forum" album, where i first heard the song, began sides 1 and 2 with heaven is in your mind and chest fever, respectively. (also my first exposure to that traffic song) so i learned they were both covers by bands i was unfamiliar with and got them confused.
that's my theory and i'm sticking to it.
