A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Hey Trouble and comrades…

Needed this Dinah Washington. Had the phone on WKCR this morning while riding with the kids to school and they were playing an amazing live album of hers. Must familiarize myself more.

Morning with a string of small frustrations: discovered yet another water bottle was left at the school playground and is gone; the other one misplaced or lost a riding helmet, then my bike chain locked up and had to seek the help of a stranger, followed by just squeezing the coffee bag too hard and it exploding all over the floor. Really good thing to be doing the deep breathing exercises first thing in the morning again.

Have done yoga and a cold shower. Got the requisite morning drinks, and now Trouble’s soothing sounds and you all.

Grazie amici.

Trouble’s set sure is helping!

Sometimes I wonder how I appear to others, because my release is often to unload a torrent of curses. My partner thinks it’s crazy. But goddamn it - it helps somehow! Heh…

As the ground coffee was exploding I’d been thinking of, and just recounted to her, another incident of enraging price-gouging at the local grocery stores. And this, just after she tells me last night that the grocer by the subway we patronize yet *again* overcharged for fruit. That’s a third time in about 10 days!

Folks, even if you’re conditioned to just automatically give your card at the checkout, ya gotta check the receipt!

Interesting take, and it's not just racoons. Red squirrels will happily gnaw their way through a screen window for cheese bread. Adding to your list. 4 electricity is not a guarantee for any length of time, be sure to have an outhouse. 5. No one and nothing can be delivered to your home, and many things will not be deliverable to your PO Box. 6. No matter how carefully you stack your woodpile, it will fall down.

Zinn, the bigger agri-food corporations upped prices so the retail food stores will too. I complain politely with the checkout cashiers. I usually say, "Hey food prices are up, but not my wages! Hee." The cashiers often smilingly agree, if the manager's not around.
With street fruit vendors; if they charge too much for bananas, I walk away.

Hey TDK. That’s funny, though not really.
Another dad at the school playground recently told me, in a discussion of why we continue to live in the city with kids (the incredible cultural diversity of the people in Queens came up big), that he recently came out to the street to find his car up on two milk crates and also missing two wheels. Made him for the first time give up owning a car.

Just finished Ada Calhoun’s “St Mark’s Is Dead” book. Your comment brought back images of the Tompkins Sq Pk showdowns and other scenes of urban struggle of which are part of life here.
Think you’d like it.

Beautiful mention of Gwendolyn, and her wonderful work.

Two nights ago spent a lovely evening at the Louis Armstrong Museum, attending a showing of the film “Louis Armstrong’s Black and Blues,” in the backyard of his former home and current museum: youtu.be...
Definitely recommended.

Feels to me that your show, possibly more than any other on the station, is a place where there’d be a greater proportion of folks who revere N’awlins. But having said that, it occurs to me that it would probably be true station-wide.
Gem of a city; so unlike the rest of this hellhole country.

Totally. The only "commercial" radio that I indulge in is good old 1010 WINS -- local and world news on loop along with traffic even though I don't have a car -- "you give us 22 minutes, we'll give you the world." I can hear the jingle in my head. Growing up, whenever we drove ANYWHERE in the 5 boros or Long Island, Mom had that on the car radio for the traffic updates as this was before cell phones, GPS, etc -- I still remember the reports from the WINS "Jam Cam" -- realtime traffic reporting. Also the old ancient jingle from Rheingold Beer ... valleyvillage.home.blog...

Thing about radio -- yer old-school, terrestrial broadcast legacy radio -- they STILL do things like Secret Sound Contest, more than half a century after I first heard 'em do it, along with "cash/jackpot calls," etc. Does that malarkey persist because it actually generates or holds more listeners, better ratings?

A nonfiction book about Ireland that I can recommend is We Don't Know Ourselves by Fintan O'Toole. The author uses his life, starting with his childhood in a Dublin suburb in the 1950s, and the events he has seen over the last 60 years, to give a cultural and political history of the country. It's best read when not traveling, though. It's very heavy. :-)

I'm currently reading 2 books. One is Hit Girls : Women of Punk In The USA, 1975 - 1983. I covers so many bands! Only about half of them I've heard of. I wish each bands story could have been fleshed out but it's still a good resource.

The other book I'm reading/looking at is Andres Serranos 'Uncensored Photographs'. I picked it up because while I was looking through it at the library I realized that I found most of his themes to be sophmoric rather than challenging. I decided to still get the book and read the essays to better understand his work.

Weird about Graeber. Like all the greats he’s always very much alive with us in his amazingly connective writing. But at the same time there’s a lament that we won’t be getting more from this uniquely gifted and compassionate anarchist.

And now there’s this pirate book! Makes me joyful. Intend to get to that over the summer…

Have been on a mission to get friends to read The Dawn of Everything. Have just succeeded with my oldest friend in the world.

The only shop I knew in Dublin closed many years ago. My Ma loved Charlie Byrne's in Galway Town, and she loved Eason's wherever they were. Eason's is sort of like an Irish B&N, not "independent" in any real sense, but Ma could load up on Irish novels on the cheap before the flight home. Kilmainham has a literary connection--it's where the British state executed the revolutionary teacher and poet, Padraic Pearse. I was always partial to James Connolly, but on our one big family trip Ma made sure we saw Pearse's home in Galway and the exact spot they murdered him in Dublin.

I was only able to do one thing there. Was out on a European tour (that began literally two or three days after 9/11) as a drum tech with an old friend’s band just after leaving my office job.
When we got to Dublin I’m not ashamed to say, in fact there’s a bit of pride in it, there was only one thing on my mind given the short few hours there until showtimes.
I took off on a wild goose chase, asking all and sundry, where Phillip Lynott’s grave was. Took two buses and after a lot of misdirection I finally came upon someone at the graveyard who knew the general proximity of where it was.
I made it, but almost got kicked off the tour for the adventure of it.
