Harper was a doll when I went to see him at this club on Flatbush Avenue (that's no longer there). I used to take my older daughter, and she always liked to talk to the artists between sets. He was very sweet to her, and then dedicated a tune to her from the stage when he got back on. He even sent a personal post card to her a while later (off the mailing list I always sign for, I suppose). Such a mench!

Sometime back in the mid-'90s, Arhoolie adjusted its policy and started sending out promo copies to a select group of DJs around the country. It also offered to sell anything from its back catalog on an at-cost basis. I was one of those fortunate DJs and basically procured everything that was in print. An incomprehensible universe of sounds. I still can't quite believe that happened. We all, through this radio program, have been bearing the fruits of that generosity ever since.

PAULS -- hope your move went well. Many years ago, some Austin friends moved to a house on Oltorf. The little old lady who lived next door came over with a pie and said she was so happy to see two nice young men move in after "those wetbacks." They looked at her and said, "That's OK, ma'am. We're queers!" She dropped the pie and fled. They never saw her again

Nice essay, Doug.

I picture three things when I picture Don Pullen: the fingers on the keys, of course. But also the bells on his ankles, keeping steady time, and a slender, quiet fellow, folded like a letter just removed from its envelope, sitting on a wall and smoking a cigarette -- a Newport, I think.
