Anyway, I heard the new group Ken Vandermark's Edition Redux on Thursday night, in little Greenfield, MA. It was an interesting group, with very young musicians I've never heard of, plus Vandermark. The main attraction was his compositions, which were extremely complex and fast-changing. There were many hand signals. I worked in a public library for over a decade, the '90s. A truly rewarding experience, despite the constant uphill battles, even pre-2008, pre-COVID.

I recall staffing the reference desk when a woman approached. She paused, then announced, "Breasts!... There, I've said it." She was inquiring about breast cancer, but had to get past the touchiness of the subject. We laughed.

I started making more use of our great public libraries during the pandemic. It had been a while. I used to use them, and buy books in bookstores. Then the bookstores disappeared, yet I kept buying. Pernicious.

A third public library breast story. (I am not making these up.) I started working the library during high school, left to work in a record store, then returned in the '90s. One evening in the '70s a young lady whom I knew from high school visited the library during my shift. She flashed me. This is my final memory of her, as sometime shortly thereafter she was killed in a horrible car accident. We miss you, Leiana.

When you mentioned Alan Broadbent, my wife went, "Ohhh!" We've attended a few of his shows. In fact, one was at the end of the '90s at the public library where we worked. I hired his trio to play our centennial. Later that night we heard him accompanying Mark Murphy at Jazz Bakery.

Looking forward to the show, Stork!

CBS/Columbia put cool stuff out into the 80's (Blood Ulmer, Arthur Blythe come to mind quickly); then corporate profits overwhelmed any impulse to explore interesting/progressive music.

Speaking of pianists, the VT Jazz Center just had its annual solo piano weekend. Last night I saw Myra Melford and Orrin Evans (separately!). I really loved the Melford, who banged on the piano wonderfully. My previous encounter with Evans was not that great, but I did like his performance last night. Surprisingly, both are still available on the VJC website, so you can hear them for free if you like (or kick in a donation): vtjazz.org

It's interesting that Evans's term with the Bad Plus has been excised from his promo materials and recent interviews/features. I mean, there's no mention of it at all. I wonder, did it go so horribly, or is he just sick of being asked about why it ended?
