I resent those of us old enuff in the USA to have grown up with the Capitol repackaging of prePepper LPs
- as they misrepresent what TheBeatles (& Marin et al) intended for sequencing - also warped out perspective of their temporal Progress - & the Cover Art was dumber & pandering with giant RED LETTERING like cheap advertising (which it was).
...Tho even a broken clock is right twice a day : with Beatle material - it had to be okay sometimes. 'Beatles Second Album' put the more R&B & Rawkin' tracks together : there was the catch-up only right then the USA had to make to Beatlemania elsewhere
...also - since TheBeatles' ethic was to not just put Hit Singles on the LPs - but to always Move Forward - the USA Capitol reshufflings put many of these on the LPs - which in some ways made them easier to collect. (Born Nov. 1963 - I did this staring in the very early 1970s...)

People's choice for Best Beatle Album has generally favored the later Studio Years. But - since in the CD / Digital Era the USA has had the 'proper' UK versions ...'Hard Day's Night' is catching up in estimation. It's the only one with nothing but Lennon-McCartney tunes - has George's groundbreaking 12-String - & is right on the precipice of the real 1960s explosion with enthusiasm & innovation (relative to 1964). Great range & quality imho.
'Beatles For Sale' - described by Tim Riley as the Yin between two Yang Movies - has lots of Covers - which hell who would want to vie without ? Treading water slightly - yet connecting to Roots - which after all - TheBeatles significantly preserved continuity with then (it's easy to forget). & the Originals - like the oe we just heard (& defended) - already showing more complexity & depth - both in mood & sonics. Presaging 'RubberSoul' (as does 'Help!' inbetween them) - more than is generally recognized, I posit. (Are TheBeatles credited as much as others as CountryRawk pioneers ?)
Yes ...it's Pop Product made to a market schedule (Xams often). But in a way - all the more notable for it...

It's true - I certainly spun 'Beatles Second Album' for the comp of more R&B & Rawkin' trax it was. As I said already. So I'll give Dexter that much. Again - Capitol had the advantage of the Singles / EP trax not out inteh USA yet - & right @ the beginning there early - the USA has to catch up with how much TheBeatles had put out in the UK already. So Dexter had much to choose from. Which he did well that time.

Well - B-Sides of Albums - like Singles - sometimes show a whole other side of an Artist. For TheBeatles' Movie albums - they were more downbeat & interesting. What TheBeatles did that was 'filler' ...that's a conditional term, I think.
As for 'Artistic Statements' - that too is qualifiable - for the whole Culture in the mid1960s. It is that Evolution of the relation twixt Pop & Art we are concerned with specifically. When a few months often meant a great deal.

First heard this sung by Judy Collins, from her "In My Life" LP. Not a huge fan of her other lps, but this one turned me on to Brel and Brecht/Weill. And she does well by The Beatles, Cohen and Dylan, among others. Her voice has a darker edge than on her other stuff.
