On disability dongles
• Disability Dongle (by Liz Jackson, Alex Haagaard, and Rua Williams, Apr 19, 2022) offers several case studies and this definition:
Disability Dongle: A well intended elegant, yet useless solution to a problem we never knew we had. Disability Dongles are most often conceived of and created in design schools and at IDEO.One case study concerns “haptic footwear”: Lecha is a “smart footwear company” that “seeks to create an intuitive and user-friendly wearable technology for visually-impaired people.” But as with other disability dongles, it seemed to overlook the reality on the ground:
Lechal’s marketing narrative ignores the possibility that “few had thought to tackle this problem” because it is not, in fact, a problem. Blind and low-vision people have been using white canes for such a long time because they’re reliable, reasonably cost-effective tools that meet their needs.White canes! Much like the wheelchair ramp that Meredith talks about in the interview: simple, low-tech, low-cost, and effective.

i (the company i worked for at the time) was sued because a website i had created was not as accessible as it needed to be. i was tremendously grateful for the opportunity to correct my mistakes, and i learned a great deal about accessibility from the process. really good experience for me as a software goober.

I think what bothers me about the whole discussion (and while I wouldn't speak for Mark, what seems to have the most resonance with what we discuss here frequently) isn't the extent to which Twitter was or was not hand-in-glove with government "intelligence community" for censorship or whether Twitter censorship is now just based on the whim of an egoistic libertarian fuckwad but that we're at all surprised by any of it. Twitter does not exist for us or for any user. It has always and only been based on monetizing engagement through the manipulation of a publishing environment. The point isn't how terrible it was then because of THEM or is now because of OTHER THEM but that it is rotten to its core and cannot be redeemed and the only logical response to is abandon it entirely and let it die alone, as it deserves. Otherwise, we're just continuing to stick our hands in the fire and act shocked when we get burned.

Turn off MSNBC and Fox and talk to people. We’ve been screwed, all of us, by a corporate coup d’etat at the hands of a duopoly government who serve only their same “donors.”
Capitalism is the enabler and facilitator.
The rich win while we lose.
