That seems to be a separate Mel's "anniversary" sketch with Roy Orbison. The "reunion" of his 60s dancers/personalities in 1984 showed them at the time, and Catherine O'Hara/Martin Short doing an *amazing* Jefferson Airplane riff, followed by showing that sold-out band in the Eighties - a devastatingly accurate parody of the 60s and how the generation transformed by the 80s.

I only recently learned that Henry Barnes' father was an English prof at Pomona College (and also played washboard in an old-timey combo), which made the transition from Man is the Bastard to Amps for Christ make a little more sense. He has played in Gun Outfit more recently, where you can occasionally detect some guitar/noise weirdness behind the pleasant jams.

Totally agree.
Someone once commented about George Jones' "He Stopped Loving Her Today" taking Nashville by storm in 1980 - and that it was the last of such good classic country.

there was an fmu premium probably 12 or 15 years ago and it had a marlon green song on it called 'forest ranger.' marlon was a muscle shoals musician and the song blows me away every time i hear it, it's just the right side of country, no trucks or beer or honky tonkin,' just the right vibe. can't find the cd anymore and don't remember which deejay put it together.

this fred neil tune is nicely twisted: guitar tone right there with dave brock's acoustic in the first hawkwind rekkid. & stretched-out vox like early roy harper. Weird dual-flashback there. I could be imagining all of this.

waylon jennings 'waymore's blues' from the mid 90s is fantastic. but i think it really was outside most of where country was going with garth brooks and the judds and reba macentire, that whole thing.

And some of the older artists had (and still make) some releases in their particular style. Though by the 90s that might be consciously a "revival" theme instead of a current album.

Dolly Parton was great at forming such trios: the "Trio" w/ Emmylou and Linda Ronstadt, and the other country queens trio w/ Loretta and Tammy (who died shortly after).

"So does Jim Carroll, whose "People Who Died" is often thought of as a direct relative." It could be another similar song with that rhythm, about people who died.

Marc Campbell: "The little rhythm track you hear on "88 Lines" is taken directly from the Casio. He turned on that little rhythm track and I was on the drums and I liked what I heard. So I took the casette tape that we made of that riff and went home. I realized there was about four or five minutes worth of riff in there, and that that would accommodate 88 lines, or 44 couplets. That was what determined the length of the song. Curiously, 88 is a pretty cosmic number. There are 88 keys on the keyboard. "Rocket 88" was a key rock and roll song. So I wondered, what can you write 88 lines about? What can you write 44 couplets about? Well, I mean, what is there, really, other than women? Maybe cars for some guys. But what were the big things in my life at that time? Sex, drugs, rock & roll. So it came down to women. I didn't have to really think twice about it. I'm actually making it sound as if I made a choice. I didn't. It just was obvious."
