Five years ago, I was doing some ethnographic work in Nakano City, the ward of Tokyo where Sakamoto is from. Low level Yakuza on every corner, bars stacked two or three high, crowded, busy, noisy. The idea that such a noisy neighborhood could produce such a beautiful sensibility stayed in my mind the whole trip.

The idea that such a noisy neighborhood could produce such a beautiful sensibility stayed in my mind the whole trip.
