April 2, 2023: A Little Booker Music and a Lotta Coryell
Trumpet gargantuan Booker Little packed a superb career into just a few years before dying at 23 from uremia, never recording a side that wasn't indispensable. By rights, he should be with us on this, his 85th birthday; Larry Coryell ranged far and wide over musical multiverses with virtuosity, incorrigibility, lyricism, and heart. Missing him today, on his 80th.

"Glen Passaic" sounds like a caller to a radio show! But I'll take the drink over the talk show any day.

The when flying back from Amarillo Tx on Monday I got one as a snack. What I got was the size of a 50 cent coin, not the hand size waffle seen on Jan's playlist and other internet photos. It was ok. The caramel filling dominated the waffle wafer.

It's great stuff; an original conception is not easy to come by (not just his playing, but the compositions and arrangements of Little's music are amazing).
As far as dying of "uremia", I've never quite gotten that, and can't find anything that gives more details. It definitely is a result of kidney failure (literally urine not being excreted collecting in the bloodstream). You can be born with kidneys that don't function (but it would be odd to just find that out in your 20's). A kidney infection would be the other most common reason for the kidneys to fail; severe infections will enlarge the kidneys and cause them to stop functioning. This could be from drug use (though I can't find anything suggesting Little was a junkie), but you can get kidney infections just randomly. If treated early, you shouldn't get kidney damage/failure, but with the state of health care for musicians in general, Black musicians in specific, there very likely could be delays in diagnosis and/or treatment.

(of course, it wouldn't be unusual for a Black Man to get substandard treatment, more so in the US, I'd think, but I don't think it's possible to know at this point in time without seeing the medical records).

to check glucose in an Emergency Room (at least now, it can be checked in a minute from a fingerstick blood sample); you could be in coma for many reasons but a high blood glucose is easy to diagnose and has specific treatment. You could also be in coma from a low blood glucose, easily treated with IV glucose, so not checking glucose (at least now) is unimaginable (a junkie with exposure, not eating, could very well have a low glucose, drug use and low glucose could go together, still would need to be checked)
