Inmate Named Peter sounded similar to Wynton Marsalis, at least when he narrates or reads on his own recordings.

Everybody in America needs to hear the Anthology of American Folk Music. Hi everybody! Hi Dave!

BTW this fall at the Whitney Museum... The first exhibition devoted to the art of Harry E. Smith. Maybe it's the first, but I am pretty sure it is.

That's Harry in front of his mural for Jimbo's Bob City. That is probably a transcription of a jazz tune he heard at the club.
  8:20pm
Dean:

Oh, I know. I know of, but am not familiar with the Anthology. Was a joke, not least because MES is difficult to square with American folk music at all!

Not an issue by any stretch. In fact, I do know the Anthology, which was a mainstay at the public library where I worked in the '90s.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm

I studied all things Harry for a number of years. Finding all the recordings and books I could get my hands on. I've seen all? of his films several times. I remember seeing Heaven and Earth Magic with Harry in the audience at the old St. Marks Theater. God, he was a funny little man.
  8:30pm
Dean:

Yes, the originals. I mean, the library opened in 1959. Public libraries were often the greatest places to find slightly obscure/off-the-wall records.

Wonderful! The first time I heard John Cage was from my high school library. Actually, that would include my first listen to experimental music in general. I dug into a lot of great stuff that no one borrowed since they were placed there. It was sad, but the pressings were clean!

I figure I first heard Cage in the womb. Thereafter, over the airwaves or vinyl playback I don't remember! But, yeah, a decent library collection of assorted musical performances with horizontal (cultural) and vertical (temporal) breadth is to be treasured.

It's my own take on Cage. There is something elemental, foundational about his ambitions. Of course, he was also very playful, too.

“The original 1/4 inch reel, labeled “Pygmy" by Graves, including 15 minutes of audio from an unknown documentary on the Mbuti People of the Congo Basin, are among the few tapes we’ve so far encountered from Graves' private archive that seem clearly intended in his conception & sequencing to be an album.”
