A little reading -- The New Yorker recently ran this brief but good piece on Todd Rundgren:

https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2023/01/02/todd-rundgren-renaissance-rocker

It makes a good point that I never thought through in all these years -- with his lucrative production work (Grand Funk! Meatloaf!), he was pretty much free to do whatever he wanted on his own albums.

Yay. wfmu made its goal. our thanks to Dave et (lotsa) al. And I’m gonna get his cd; I know v little of prog. An aside now—

sorry for long post below. But it puts down prog. And I like making a ruckus, esp when no one can see me. From nytimes obit of producer Spot, an excerpt

By the mid-'70s, …Mr. [Spot], like a lot of future punk figures, had grown weary of prog, with its self-consciously elaborate compositions and arrangements. …he began recording jazz groups, and was inspired by the unfiltered studio approach of the combos he recorded.

Jazz musicians "didn't want anything fancy,”… "They just wanted to get the things down, and they a didn't care if someone played a bad note or not."

…he was working as a waiter at a vegetarian restaurant [and] met Greg Ginn, who would later help found both Black Flag and SST Records

Despite their different music…

My 'progression' with Pink Floyd albums moved rapidly backwards from an 8-track of "Dark Side" (that was government issue to every household, right?), to LPs of "Meddle", "Ummagumma" and an odd Syd-era compilation titled "Masters Of Rock" -- at which point I said "Yes! This is the best of all!"

This is Pink F transitioning from 1967-68 psychedelia toward early 70s "prog." But they didn't have the playing chops to go whole prog hog -- which actually served them very well in the accessibility department by 1973.

By 'psychedelic', I only meant the prominent musical genre in 67-68, which only lasted a couple of years before transforming into other genres (incl. 'prog').
