March 13, 2023: Fundraising marathon show with co-host Bryce
Listen to this show:
MP3 - 128K | Pop-up player!
Above: A Simple Desultory Techtonic, the 2023 marathon premium. Four tracks by Si-mark and Scott-funkel (music led by Scott Williams; Matt Fiveash on bass; recording by Lily Wen), 16 more tracks chosen by Mark Hurst, cover designed by Greg Harrison.
How to get the Techtonic premium: Pledge $10/month or $75 one-time, then click “1 DJ Premium”. Then on the next page under Monday, click “Techtonic With Mark Hurst - A Simple Desultory Techtonic.”
Or just call 1-800-989-9368 and say you want the Techtonic premium.
Here are the first four tracks of the album, performed by Scott and me ("Si-mark and Scott-funkel"), with help from Matt Fiveash and Lily Wen, covering some classic Simon and Garfunkel tunes – with dystopian lyrics written in:
1. The Sounds of Surveillance
2. A Simple Desultory Techtonic
3. The Only Honest Man in Big Tech
4. The Internet
The remaining 16 tracks are tech-themed songs that, for the most part, I have played on past Techtonic episodes. So the CD contains a full 20 tracks – delivering desultory dystopia!

This week: DJ Bryce, host of Bryce (Friday 12noon - 3pm Eastern)
News:
• Vanderbilt apologizes for using ChatGPT in email on Michigan shooting (The Guardian, Feb 22, 2023): “Officials at Vanderbilt University apologized for using an AI chatbot to write a consoling email to students after a mass shooting at Michigan State University.” One student said, “Deans, provosts, and the chancellor: do more. Do anything. And lead us into a better future with genuine, human empathy, not a robot.”
• Briant Merchant in the LA Times (Feb 16, 2023): “Search engines have always been unreliable conduits for truth, but chatbot search interfaces are particularly treacherous, owing to what’s been dubbed the ‘one true answer’ problem: Rather than present a list of possible results and inviting users to select among them, they serve up one canonical answer. When the question is ‘Is it safe to boil a baby?’ and the answer is ‘Yes’ — a real-life example from Bing — you’ve got trouble.”
• Article in Slate (March 8, 2023) about RadioGPT, “a new tool from the Ohio-based software company Futuri Media that fully digitizes the broadcast host as you know it. . . . [using] GPT-3, the large language model that powers the hit chatbot ChatGPT; and A.I.-voice ‘personalities’ made by Futuri that can learn the info scraped by TopicPulse and aggregated by GPT-3 to read readymade copy live on air.” Thanks to listener Joe S. for sending this in!

I have probably one year's time's worth of material to which I didn't listen immediately but dumped directly to disc (e.g. using wget on the stream) to which I will probably never listen. Oh well, when the Omega-Point A.I. resurrects me, maybe I can get all that data folded into my natural memories, along with the Dirac matrices, classical Greek, Latin, Chinese, and Hebrew, and the three thousand most common Chinese characters, including the Japanese ones (screw the simplified).
