Prettiest Eyes | It Costs To Be Austere | Volume 3 | Castle Face | 2019 | Once you’ve become accustomed to their clanging synthetic orbit, it’s hard to find other tunes that truly scratch the same itch. Prettiest Eyes bursts at the seams with chrome-dipped timbres and surprise sharp edges, alien klaxon-calls and wailing dissonance offsetting the ziplock’d grease of their insistent drum and bass grooves. They are one of the most exciting live bands going on right now, and we love them! This is a cover, originally performed by Crash Course in Science! | 0:16:37 (Pop-up)
LCD Soundsystem | New Body Rhumba | New Body Rhumba Single (White Noise OST) | Sony Records | 2022 | We saw this film on the weekend. It is maddening and hilarious. The full-on musical number that caps the movie as credits unspool features the principal cast and extras dancing their way through a mock-1980s supermarket to the tune of “New Body Rhumba,” the first new song James Murphy penned for his beloved, reconstitued group in five years. He says of the song.. "nd not everything in the ‘80s was shiny synthesizers and gated reverbs. There’s a lot of Replacements records and Feelies records and Fall records and things that have a different palette. So I was like: I know that my urtext is that decade. So I’ll just make the music that I want to make and fixate more on that. And then a band I didn’t think of at all while making the song, but I guess is part of my blood, is the B-52s. I didn’t think about them at all, but Noah was like, “It sounds like the B-52s,” and then afterwards it’s like, “Oh, it does. It sounds like the B-52s.” I hadn’t thought about that. But that’s still more ‘70s, although early ‘80s, too — that era of B-52s, the Ricky (Wilson) era, with the original guitar player." | 0:20:37 (Pop-up)

Cosmic Runner is a musical project by Edinburgh -based Scottish musician Drew McFayden . In order to give his own, strongly Krautrock -inspired music an authentic story, he invented his alter ego Martin R. Drew , which is derived from his first name (“drew”, English for “drawn”), among other things. McFayden was so convincing with his elaborate legend that some blogs fell completely for his swindle. The fictional origin: Cosmic Runner started in East Berlin in 1972 as a one-man electronics project. The sound engineer Martin R. Zeichnete worked for DEFA in the early 1970s and through his work developed into an expert in synthesizer technology . Night after night, Zeichnete listened to West German radio stations broadcasting music by Kraftwerk , Neu! , La Düsseldorf , Cluster , Moebius , Roedelius , Harmonia and many other players in cosmic music played. As a passionate runner, he was struck by the basic rhythmic structure of the repetitive drumming of Neu!/La Düsseldorf drummer Klaus Dinger . His thought: The repetitive, hypnotic music could have a special effect on the performance of long-distance runners in training. He recorded the electronic music from Germany and listened to the cassettes while running with a Walkman prototype, the Stereobelt . He quickly discovered that his concentration and lap times improved. The plan to use this music to improve the performance of the East German Olympic team was born. |

It was composed of Simeon (born Simeon Oliver Coxe III,[4] June 4, 1938 – September 8, 2020), who performed on a primitive synthesizer of his own devising; and, until his death in 2005, drummer Danny Taylor. The duo were among the first to employ electronic music techniques outside of academia, applying them to 1960s rock and pop styles. //// As part of New York's underground music scene, the band released two albums—Silver Apples (1968) and Contact (1969)—to poor sales. They began recording a third album before a lawsuit by Pan Am, owing to the use of their logo in the artwork of Contact, forced the end of the group and its label Kapp in 1970. In the 1990s, German bootleg recordings of the band's albums raised their profile, and Simeon reformed the group with other musicians and released new music. In 1998, he reconnected with Taylor, and the two completed their original third LP The Garden (1998). After Taylor's death, Simeon continued releasing Silver Apples projects using samples of Taylor's drumming." | 0:51:03 (Pop-up)

I'd not been able to write any songs throughout 2020, my brain was immersed in child-care. When New Year hit, i decided to decamp to St Franny's Bothan for a week, to try and hoover some music from my brain. I recorded demos on my 8-track machine, playing just bass guitar, drum machine, casio keyboard and sampler - and then took these recordings down to Rob's place in Aldershot. //// The album is about reconnecting with nature, and trying to find some sense of belonging." | 0:55:04 (Pop-up)

Dan Boadi | Money Is the Root of All Evil | Money Is the Root of All Evil | NAAP | 1977 | After receiving regional praise for his 1976 debut Abrabo, Dan Boadi set his sights on leaving Ghana and bringing his highlife sensibilities to an American audience. Recorded at Paul Serrano’s namesake studio on E. 23rd St. in Chicago, Boadi’s U.S. debut showcased the true scope of his musical range; weaving in and out of funk, highlife, afrobeat, and reggae. The title track immediately demands the listener’s attention with a chugging drum lead by The African International’s King Tuch, setting the pace for Boadi’s colorful orchestration to follow. Money Is The Root of Evil claims it’s own space as a musical melting pot and reflects the excitement Boadi was learning to harness as a musician in his newfound home of Chicago. | 1:17:45 (Pop-up)

Yoko Ono | Sisters, Oh Sisters | Sometime In New York City | Apple Records | 1972 | "Sisters, O Sisters", is a song written by Yoko Ono that first appeared on John Lennon's and Yoko Ono's 1972 Plastic Ono Band album Some Time in New York City, backed by Elephant's Memory. "Sisters, O Sisters" was intended as a reggae song, but, according to Lennon, Elephant's Memory were all from New York, and they did not understand reggae. Lennon claimed that he tried to explain reggae to them by teaching them Desmond Dekker's "The Israelites". Unlike Ono's earlier political songs, in which she believed the world could be changed by "the power of positive projection", in "Sisters, O Sisters" she encourages the listener to intervene directly. | 1:58:33 (Pop-up)
Habibi | Nice | Nice Single | Kill Rock Stars | 2021 | Habibi is an American rock band from Brooklyn, New York. They are a blend of psychedelic rock and sixties girl group harmonies. The name Habibi means "my love," an Arabic word vocalist Rahill Jamalifard grew up using despite her Iranian origin (the term is not in use in Iran). The sound of Habibi is influenced both by the garage rock/girl group sounds from Detroit as well as the Middle Eastern melody structures that were shared by Lynch and Jamalifard, who is herself of Iranian descent. Jamalifard influences are also related to her ancestry mentioning “Iran, gypsies, nomads, the inspiration of poets like Hafez . . . my travels within the country. Phyllis Dillon | Woman Of the Ghetto | One Life To Live | Sanctuary Records | 1972 | "Woman of the Ghetto" by Phyllis Dillon is a cover of Marlena Shaw's "Woman of the Ghetto". Dillon was introduced to Treasure Isle studios by Tommy McCook, and recorded her first record for Duke Reid, "Don’t Stay Away", in late 1966, a recording that has been described as "perhaps the finest female performance in Jamaican music". At the end of 1967, Dillon moved to New York.[2] The following five years were spent living a double life. She had a family and career in banking in the United States, flying frequently back to Kingston, Jamaica to continue recording. She passed away in 2004 at the age of 59 after a short battle with cancer. | 2:04:40 (Pop-up)

1969 |
n 1969, during the unexpected commercial success of her debut studio album Switched-On Bach (1968), Carlos and her friend, collaborator, and producer Rachel Elkind started work on a follow-up using the same formula as Switched-On Bach: performing selections of classical music on a modular Moog synthesizer. The two decided on a "new switched on Baroque album" featuring multiple composers, including Johann Sebastian Bach, Claudio Monteverdi, Domenico Scarlatti, and George Frideric Handel. Canadian pianist Glenn Gould spoke about Carlos' rendition of Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 in G major: "To put it bluntly, the finest performance of any of the Brandenburgs—live, canned, or intuited—I've ever heard." |

Gina Birch | Feminist Song | I Play My Bass Loud | Third Man | 2023 | This album is absolutely magical. “Feminist Song” is a measured rallying cry that’s all the more powerful for its restraint. Over gentle keyboards and da Silva’s analogue synth, Birch quietly seethes through the spoken verses, before exploding into the chorus: “I’m a city girl / I’m a warrior / The city made me this way / I’m a drunkard, I’m political / I’m contagious, I’m analytical”. Birch has spent many years away from music following other artistic pursuits..filmmaking, direction, visual art..and it is so glad to have her voice back in the musical realm with so much to say that resonates with so many! | * | 2:15:45 (Pop-up) |

So I want to start a food service called Bolo Tie Dinners or Peckerwood Eatery, in which every box would have that big block of Velveeta, various meats with flour for breading and frying, many packets of BBQ sauce, a couple of slices of white bread and nary a green vegetable in sight. Lots of canned corn. Kool-Aid! No concerns about spoilage! YES!!! I can already see the menus: "Tootee's Fruited Porkettes," "Manwich Delight," etc. Maybe I could get Trump to endorse it if I pay him enough. You have to spend money to make money, right?
