One indication of her willingness to embrace modern culture came at Christmas that year. This holiday meant more than any other in our house-holds. Whereas in past years her gifts were conventional, such as the usual socks and underwear, cool Hot Wheels, and special wooden toys made by Papa in his basement workshop, in 1974 I opened a couple of gifts that were like no other: records. I thought to myself, "How did Nana know how to buy a rock 'n' roll record?"
She had seen a television commercial for K-tel records and thought,
"The kids are really getting into music these days," so she gave my brother and me the latest release advertised, called Heavy Metal. In the history of the genre, I can think of no earlier use of this term than this K-tel album. I am absolutely sure that Nana had no idea it would become a genre of music, nor that some of the bands on that album would one day play concerts

festivals on stages that I would share with my own band. Nonetheless, my surprise and excitement upon opening the album gift was the pleasing result Nana hoped for. I studied the cover and liner notes but had to wait to play it, for Nana had no turntable. Im quite sure that she was perfectly content not having to hear what was hidden in those grooves.
This album contained an eclectic mix of classic recordings from bands like Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix, Alice Cooper, Allman Brothers, I. Rex, MC5, Buffalo Springfield, and the Eagles. Clearly, the album title had no intention of classifying a genre. But the one track that I paid particular attention to, and that set the tone for my budding interest in unconventional music, was "Starship Trooper" by the band Yes.
To say that this had an influence on my musical taste would be an un-derstatement, because it also formed the core of my social life to an important degree.
