Mrs. Miller interview! WFMU's own Chili MacPagoda grills our star of the night just off stage before her performance with the questions we ALL want to ask her! In the background, you can hear Ed Sullivan and Topo Gigio performing their usual skit fare to warm the crowd up after 3 earlier warm up acts: The Remains came on first performing their version of "All Day and All of the Night" followed by Bob Irwin & the Pluto Walkers' "The Throwaway Age" and finally the Manfred Mann band reunion featuring EVERY lead singer and musician ever to play on any record by the band! They performed a medley of EVERY type of music they ever did! It was about 2 hours long! They even invited Barry of the remains up to sing on "Bring it to Jerome" and let Bob play on Walking Around. It was a crowded stage before Ed and Topo took over. | 0:52:42 (Pop-up) | ||||||

90% of the radio off air tapings were made by me and my brothers in Dodge City, Kansas growing up listening long distance. SPECIAL THANKS AND CREDITS: Jill and my mom and dad and brothers! Matt Clarke for all his help always in these endeavors and the piano for Elva too. Thanks to FMU's friend to all, Chili MacPagoda for handling Elva Miller! Thanks to the great Dusty Rhodes who has been on the air in Syracuse, Cincinnati and Windsor/Detroit CKLW playing the discs from 1955 to 2023! A great talent and friend. Thanks to Al Dawson of the Cryan Shames! Bob Irwin for letting me a TINY part of his musical time at Sundazed (Many of these songs tonight on that label because of him). Thanks to Harry Harrison of the great WMCA and WABC and doing MOST of the 60's interviews heard tonight. Thanks to all the groovy interview-ees! Great talent of which many are now gone. AND of course, MRS. MILLER! Just as she was to turn 60 years old, she got a Capitol Records contract and became a TV star as well, showing up on Ed Sullivan and other programs. Like me, she grew up some in Kansas, but was discovered by DJ Gary Owens. She passed away at age 89 in 1997.
And the GREAT DJs that appeared in this order from our radio tapes:
Charlie O'Donnell was a KRLA LA DJ 64-7 and part time fill in as host of American bandstand for Dick Clark as well. His appearance HERE came from the actual Simon & Garfunkel "7 O'Clock News/Silent Night" record with my teletype as background. Frank Brodie of CKLW Windsor/Detroit. That station gave us the hits and the RNB to fill our ears. Russ "Weird Beard" Knight of KILT Houston. It was his real life crowd control at the Beatles concert 8/19/1965 in Houston heard in the show.. Dusty Rhodes WSAI, CKLW, WLW and many more we listened to him on over the decades. A great friend. Brian Matthew of the BBC. What a list of talent he introduced over the years! Howie Roberts and Carole Simpson of the news dept mostly at WCFL in Chicago. Those voices reigned loud and long in Chicago. Ron Riley of WLS Chicago--the DJ I wanted to be growing up! AND we will see his work in a documentary soon, hopefully! A great friend as well. Dex Card of WLS--the guy I ran home from school to hear him play the WLS countdown of hits show afternoons. Jim LaBarbara of WKYC afternoons when he was the known as "The Music Professor" at WKYC Cleveland and also in Cincy. He had all the group news! Barney Pip of WCFL Chicago--The high voice who had us as "Pip People" night times from the Cheetah! A good friend until his death a decade ago. His signature phrase "Turn into P-Nut Butter" could be heard often in Chicago in the late 60's. Clyde Clifford of KAAY Little Rock, Arkansas. That 50,000 watt station got out all over with his late night shows and people remember it to this day often. Lee "Baby" Simms was the late night jock doing the "heavy" hits on WKYC. A solid hour of Hendrix on AM radio?? Don Kelly of WKYC Cleveland again doing the evening shift of rock. What a great station until they changed format abruptly in 1969.
Thanks for listening! |
